Warriors Win Slugfest 10-8 Over GVSU

Wayne State scored in every inning but one.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (22-8, 9-2 GLIAC) welcomed No. 25 Grand Valley State (21-10, 4-3 GLIAC) to town on Thursday with a 10-8 victory powered by five home runs.  The Warriors scored in every inning except the seventh.  The wind was gusting up to 40 miles per hour and was going out to right field most of the contest, helping several fly balls clear the fence.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Spencer Nelson homered on the first pitch of the game but WSU answered with a Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) solo shot in the bottom of the first inning.

GVSU used three hits in the top of the second to score a run and take a 2-1 advantage.

Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) tied the game up at 2-2 with home run down the right field line in the bottom of the second.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) out the Green & Gold on top, 4-2, with a two-run blast in the bottom of the third inning.  The long ball did not need any help from the jet stream as it landed on the berm near the M-10 freeway.

Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) extended the home margin to 5-2 with an RBI single into center field in the bottom of the fourth inning.  An RBI double by Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) to right center pushed WSU's lead to 6-2.

GVSU scored four runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning.  Kyle Nott delivered the big blow with a three-run home run to right field.

Zimmerman connected for a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning to center field.  Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) singled home a run and a sac fly from MacLean pushed WSU back in front, 9-6.

MacLean's second big fly of the day made it 10-7 after eight innings.

The visitors made it very interesting in the top of the ninth inning.  Nathan Logan homered to start the inning and Brendan Guciardo doubled following a line out.  A base hit and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases before a pop out.  A passed ball allowed GVSU's eighth run to score but Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) was able to work around a two-out walk and get Nott to fly out to left field, ending the game.

AT THE PLATE
Zimmerman led the way, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Foley, MacLean, Tanderys and Ramirez all had two hits.  MacLean drove in three runs.

ON THE MOUND
Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) (2-2) battled through six and 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs and striking out two.

Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) allowed two runs (one earned) int wo innings of relief and struck out a pair of batters.  Sommers earned his fifth save of the season by recording the final two outs and not allowing a run.

UP NEXT
WSU and GVSU will play twice on Friday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
