Baseball Wins Wild Series Finale 21-15

WSU scored 10 runs in the 10th inning.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (27-12, 12-6 GLIAC) finished a four-game set at Northwood (23-16-1, 9-6 GLIAC) on Sunday and WSU won a wild game 21-15 to avoid being swept. The Warriors used a 10-run inning and a six-run inning to salvage the series.  WSU led 11-2 in the sixth inning but NU scored five runs in the eighth inning to force extras.

HOW IT HAPPENED
An error opened the door for a big Green & Gold inning in the top of the third.  The bases were loaded after the error, a walk and a Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) single.  Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) gave WSU a 2-0 lead with a single into right field.  Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) extended the visitors' advantage to 3-0 with an infield RBI single.  A bases-clearing double from Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) made it 6-0

Zimmerman sent his second double of the game into left center in the fifth inning and came around to score on a single by Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline).  WSU's led 8-0 after an RBI single by Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.).

Two hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth inning produced two runs for Northwood.

Back-to-back walks before a Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) single gave Wayne State a 9-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning.  A wild pitch during the next at-bat made it 10-2.  Zimmerman drove in his fourth run of the day with a single into center field, pushing WSU ahead 11-2.

NU got back into the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and another tally in the seventh.  Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) entered from the bullpen and recorded back-to-back outs to leave the bases loaded in the seventh.

Once again, NU loaded the bases in the eighth inning with no outs.  After Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) collected two outs, a wild pitch brought the T-Wolves within four 11-7.  A two-out, two-run triple made it 11-9 as the momentum was firmly with Northwood.  Khale Showers tied the game at 11-11 with a two-run home run to left field.

Northwood's leadoff hitter reached to start the bottom of the ninth but a failed sacrifice bunt and a 6-3 double play sent the game to extra innings.

Tanderys drew a walk to start the 10th inning and advanced to second base on a wild pitch.  Following a walk to Ramirez, a single up the middle gave the Warriors a 12-11 lead.  Miller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home another run before Zimmerman's fourth hit drove in his fifth and sixth RBI making it 15-11.  An error allowed to more runs to cross and Wayne State led 17-11.  Another run from a wild pitch accounted for WSU's 18th run of the day and a three-run home run by MacLean stretched the advantage to 21-11.

The Timberwolves scored four runs in the bottom of the 10th inning on a pair of two-run home runs.

AT THE PLATE
Zimmerman finished 4-for-6 with six RBI, two doubles and two runs scored.  The six RBI matches the third most in a game in program history.  MacLean finished with five RBI, going 3-for-7, while DeLanoy went 3-for- with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.  Tanderys, Ramirez, and Foley all had two hits and Ramirez also walked on four occasions.

ON THE MOUND
Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) started and allowed five runs (three earned) in five and a 1/3 innings, while striking out five.  Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) was called on out of the bullpen and allowed a run in his inning of relief.

Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) was touched for three runs in 2/3 of an inning before Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) (3-0) gave up five runs (four earned) in two and 2/3 innings.

David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) finished the game on the mound, allowing an unearned run.
