Comeback Attempt Falls Short for Baseball in Series Finale

The tying run was thrown out at home to end the game.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (30-14, 15-7 GLIAC) dropped the series finale to Purdue Northwest (18-17, 7-14 GLIAC) on Sunday 11-10.  Nine Warriors were recognized before playing their final home game at Harwell Field.  WSU scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth but the game-tying run was cut down at home to end the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) and Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) started the frame with back-to-back singles before Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) was plunked.  Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) cleared the bases with a three-run triple into right center.  An RBI groundout by Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) made it 4-0.

Four hits, including a three-run home run by Bret Matthys tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the third inning.

Tanderys put the Green & Gold back on top with an RBI double into right in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Ramirez extended the home advantage to 6-4 with an RBI single into left field.

The Pride connected for back-to-back home runs to start the seventh inning and added another run later in the frame to take their first lead of the game, 7-6.

Another solo home run from PNW, this time by Tyler Schultz, made it 8-6.  The Pride used two hits and two walks to push across three runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) started the bottom of the ninth with a pinch-hit single and Nate Roede (Byron Center, Mich.) followed with another pinch-hit single through the left side.  DeLanoy crushed his GLIAC-leading 10th home run way over the wall in right field to trim the visitors' lead to two, 11-9.  After a strikeout, Tanderys drew a walk.  Ramirez took four straight outside the zone from new pitcher Jackson Lund.  MacLean sent a double into right field hooking towards the line scoring one run.  However, the second runner trying to score was thrown out at home to end the contest.

AT THE PLATE
Ramirez finished 3-for-5 with four RBI and a walk.  DeLanoy drove in three runs with two hits.

ON THE MOUND
Pitching was the story for WSU on Sunday and not in a good way.  Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) started and lasted just three innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) allowed two runs in three innings with five strikeouts.

Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) (3-2) did not record an out and gave up the eventual go-ahead run.  Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) was touched for a run in inning of relief before  Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) worked the next inning and a 1/3 allowing three runs.

David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) was the sixth and final hurler used by the Warriors and record the final two outs without incident in the top of the ninth.

UP NEXT

Wayne State will finally finish the series with Parkside in Wisconsin on May 4-5.
