Baseball Survives with 10-3 Win Over Ashland

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (36-18) won 10-3 over Ashland (35-21) in an elimination game on Friday as play continued in the NCAA Midwest Regional #2.  The Green & Gold match the program record for wins, which was set in 2014.

The Warriors are hosting an NCAA tournament at Harwell Field for the first time in program history.  WSU is the second seed, while Ashland was seeded sixth.  WSU is playing in the NCAA postseason for the ninth time in program history and seventh under head coach Ryan Kelley.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) drew a leadoff in the top of the second inning before Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) singled to center field.  Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) also singled to center and a misplay in center field allowed the game's first run of the game.

The Eagles used a two-run double by Sebastian Fabik to take a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the second inning.

However, a two-run single by Ramirez put the Green & Gold back on top, 3-2 in the top of the third inning.

Another RBI by Ramirez in the fifth made it 4-2.  Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) doubled to start the seventh inning and a Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) single into right center pushed WSU's lead to 5-2.

The Warriors used four hits and a walk in the ninth inning to add five runs to their lead.  Tanderys started the scoring with a deep home run to right field.  Ramirez collected his fourth RBI of the day with a single to left field and Dale cracked a three-run home run to left center field, giving Wayne State a 10-2 lead.

Ashland got a solo home run from Brady Cottom in the bottom of the ninth inning.

AT THE PLATE
Ramirez finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored, while Tanderys had three hits and two RBI.  Dale drove in three on two hits.  Miller and Finkbeiner both posted two-hit games.

ON THE MOUND
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (9-1) continued his outstanding season, allowing two runs over eight innings with three strikeouts.

David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) worked the final inning and allowed a run on a hit and two walks.  He struck out two batters.

UP NEXT
The Green & Gold will meet Walsh on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.  The winner of the game will play Illinois-Springfield, needing to defeat the Prairie Stars to force a winner-take-all game on Sunday.
