Warrior Football Season Preview

DETROIT -- The 2022 Wayne State University football team will not have the same look as the 2021 team both on the field and in the coaching box with three new assistant coaches and only nine returning starters (five on defense and four on offense).

Of the 110 student-athletes currently listed on the roster for 2022, only 36 have earned a letter at WSU headlined by three-year letterwinners Nick Poterack, Jacob Mass and Sean Banaszak. The eight two-year letterwinners are Niko Mosley, Will Butler, Nick Isley, Julius Wilkerson, Lukas Cusac, Cooper Kukal, Noah Nicklin, and Charles Ellington.

Fifty (50) of the players are either true freshmen (30) or redshirt freshmen (20), while the remaining 24 are entering at least their third year in college, but have not lettered.

The 2022 schedule will not be an easy one for the Warriors opening the campaign at perennially national power Slippery Rock, before four consecutive home contests vs. Shaw, Wisconsin-La Crosse, Grand Valley State and Northern Michigan (Homecoming).

Following back-to-back road trips to Michigan Tech and Davenport, Wayne State will host Saginaw Valley State before a bye week. WSU will end the regular season with a contest at Grand Valley State and the home finale versus defending national champion Ferris State.

Head coach Paul Winters, a three-time GLIAC Coach of the Year recipient, enters his 19th season guiding the Warriors with three new assistant coaches in wide receivers coach Derrick Alexander, defensive line coach Frank Espy, and defensive coordinator/secondary coach Antwon Robinson.
