Football Upended 28-21 By Wisconsin-La Crosse

Freshman Elijah Fowlkes

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football squad (1-2 overall) suffered a 28-21 setback to visiting Wisconsin-La Crosse (3-0 overall) Saturday evening at Tom Adams Field.  The Eagles were ranked No. 11 in the nation in Division 3 this week.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
UWL took the opening kickoff and drove inside the WSU 10-yard line, before graduate student Matt Buschman (Brighton, Mich.) intercepted a pass in the end zone on second-and-goal.  IT was WSU's first interception of the season.

The Warrior offense drove 80 yards in 13 plays on the ensuing drive to take a 7-0 lead with 5:32 remaining in the opening stanza.  Graduate student Nick Poterack (Byron Center, Mich.) had a 19-yard reception on third-and-seven and a 20-yard catch on third-and-15 on back-to-back series.  Sophomore Myren Harris (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Chippewa Valley) had four runs in a span of five plays accounting for 18 of the final 22 yards.  It was Harris' first rushing touchdown of the campaign.

The teams exchanged punts on each of their next possession's.

Second Quarter
The Eagles started a drive late in the opening stanza, and on the first play of the second period, freshman cornerback Elijah Fowlkes (Cleveland, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) intercepted a Cade Garcia pass and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown.  It was WSU's first interception return for a touchdown since Brandon Tuck-Hayden intercepted a Michigan Tech pass in the Huskie end zone for six points.

Wisconsin-La Crosse cut its deficit in half with a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive which took over seven minutes off the clock.  Keyser Helterbrand completed an eight-yard scoring pass to Jack Studer.  Running back Joey Stutzman began the drive with back-to-back carries totaling 29 yards.

Wayne State garnered one first down, but had to punt.  It took UWL just five plays to go 70 yards as Garcia connected with Dustin Schultz on a 41-yard touchdown pass play to even the score at 14-14.

The WSU offense went three-and-out and took just 65 seconds off the clock.  The Eagles began their next possession with a 40-yard scamper by Helterbrand, who finished the drive with a two-yard touchdown jaunt with just six seconds remaining in the opening half.

Third Quarter
The Warriors took the second half and drove 70 yards in eight plays.  After a holding penalty on the first play negated a first down pass play, sophomore quarterback Josh Kulka (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Chippewa Valley) had a 12-yard pass play to Harris and with a roughing the passer penalty, the ball was near midfield.  Junior Kendall Williams (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) had a 17-yard reception, and two plays later Harris went around left end for the 15-yard touchdown scamper to knot the game at 21-21.

Wisconsin-La Crosse punted on its next two drives, while both Wayne State drives ended in blocked field goal attempts.

Fourth Quarter
A UWL drive that began late in the third stanza and carried over into the fourth period, concluded with Garcia connecting with Ryan Bartol on an 11-yard touchdown pass completing a 13-play, 71-yard drive.  The Eagles led 28-21 with 11:20 left.

Kulka was intercepted on third down, but Fowlkes recorded his second pick of the game right after Wisconsin-La Crosse drove into the red zone.

Wayne State moved out towards midfield as the first career reception for Nathaniel Eberly-Rodriguez (Petoskey, Mich.) went for 35 yards.  Wayne State was forced to punt and the Eagles ran out the final six minutes of the clock.
