Football Suffers 17-10 Overtime Setback At Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University football team (2-6 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) suffered a 17-10 overtime setback at Saginaw Valley State University (4-4 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
After each team punted on its initial possession, the Warriors drove 65 yards in nine plays to take a 7-0 advantage.  True freshman Justin Cox (Akron, Ohio / East Community Learning Center) had a 13-yard completion to senior Kendall Williams (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) on a third-and-seven on his first collegiate pass attempt.  Three plays later, Cox connected with sophomore Dion Brown, Jr. (Flint, Mich. / Davison) for 27 yards on a third-and-eight.  Following a 10-yard scramble by Cox setting up a first-and-goal, he went four yards for his first collegiate touchdown with 2:57 left in the opening stanza.

SVSU punted after a 10-play drive stalled at the Warrior 43-yard line.

Second Quarter
Wayne State followed with a 10-play drive, before punter Jeremy Taras (Macomb, Mich. / Henry Ford II) fake punt came up one yard short giving the host Cardinals the ball at the WSU 37.

On the fifth play of the ensuing drive, SVSU's Mike O'Horo found Terrance Brown in the end zone for a 23-yard score to knot the game at 7-7.

Wayne State out-gained Saginaw Valley State 97-37 on the ground and 87-46 through the air for a 184 to 83 advantage in total offense.  The time of possession also favored the Warriors (21:19 to 8:41).

Third Quarter
Just like the first period, both teams punted on their initial possessions after intermission.

The punting brigade continued with both squads punting on each of their next two drives.  However on WSU's third punt of the half, the Warriors were flagged for kick catch interference which gave Saginaw Valley State the ball at the WSU 37.

The Wayne State defense only allowed 18 yards in five plays, leading to a 36-yard field goal by Ryan Heicher with 13:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter
The Warriors were able to knot the score at 10-10 on the ensuing possession with a nine-play, 37-yard drive culminating in a 41-yard field goal by junior Griffin Milovanski (Saugatuck, Mich.).  Junior Te'Avion Warren (Flint, Mich. / Davison) had a 35-yard kickoff return to start the drive and senior Darrin King II (Inkster, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) hauled in a 13-yard pass from Cox on a third-and-14, then Cox garnered the first down on a fourth down carry.

Graduate student Shavez Hawkins, Jr. (San Tan Valley, Ariz. / Williams Field) intercepted a Cardinal pass two plays later giving WSU the ball at the SVSU 41.

Wayne State drove to the Saginaw Valley State one-yard line with under three minutes left in regulation, but Milovanski's field goal attempt was wide right.

Overtime
Terrance Brown had a 22-yard carry on the first play of the extra session, setting up a first-and-goal.  O'Horo had a two-yard keeper on third-and-goal for the go-ahead touchdown.

Williams answered with a 22-yard gain on WSU's first play of overtime, and a two-yard carry to the one-yard line, WSU had back-to-back negative plays setting up a fourth-and-goal.  Cox's pass was intercepted to end the game.
