Football Falls In Home Finale To No. 3-Grand Valley State

WSU will conclude 2023 campaign at Ferris State on Nov. 11th.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football squad (3-7 overall, 2-3 GLIAC) concluded its 2023 home slate with a 66-10 setback to third-ranked Grand Valley State (8-1 overall, 5-0 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at Tom Adams Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
WSU garnered one first down on the game's opening possession as freshman quarterback Justin Cox (Akron, Ohio / East Community Learning Center) found senior wide receiver Darrin King II (Inkster, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) for 14 yards on a third-and-eight before having to punt.

GVSU went 74 yards in five plays with Cade Peterson tossing a 14-yard scoring strike to Gavin Cossou with 7:53 left in the opening period.  Peterson had a 50-yard rush on third-and-three to set up the score.

Laker Ian Kennelly blocked the Warrior punt on the ensuing drive and it took Grand Valley State 1:42 to go 23 yards with Tariq Reid scoring on a one-yard run with 4:50 remaining.

GVSU recovered an onside kick, and following a penalty on the Warriors, Peterson found Jordan Johnson for a 40-yard touchdown pass just eight seconds after the previous score.

Second Quarter
Wayne State punted late in the first stanza, with the Lakers then going 58 yards in six plays with Darrell Johnson hauling in a nine-yard scoring pass from Peterson just 47 seconds into the second period giving the guests a 28-0 advantage.

WSU drove 36 yards on the next drive but a fourth down pass was incomplete.

Grand Valley State's Avery Moore scored on a two-yard keeper completing a nine-play, 61-yard drive with 2:22 left before intermission.

The Warriors earned a pair of first downs, a 14-yard pass from Cox to sophomore Dion Brown, Jr. (Flint, Mich. / Davison) and an eight-yard reception by junior tight end Nathaniel Eberly-Rodriguez (Petoskey, Mich.) but had to punt.

On the final play of the first half, Peterson was sacked by Donte Reed, who forced a fumble that was recovered by GVSU.

The Lakers had a 252-59 edge in total offense despite Wayne State holding an 18:42 to 11:18 edge in time of possession.

Third Quarter
Grand Valley State drove 75 yards in seven plays to start the second half with Reid scoring on a 27-yard scamper.  After a three-and-out by the WSU offense, GVSU's Kyle Nott returned the punt 81 yards for another Laker touchdown.

After both teams punted on their next possessions, the Warriors Griffin Milovanksi (Saugatuck, Mich.) connected on a 27-yard field goal attempt to conclude a 75-yard drive in 12 plays.  Junior Jeremiah Sterling, Jr. (Benton Harbor, Mich. / St. Joseph) had a 15-yard carry and freshman Ke'Waun Farnum (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores) was credited with a 30-yard rush after his potential 70-yard touchdown run was called back for holding.  Farnum (20 yards) and Brown, Jr. (14 yards) each had big receptions on the drive from graduate student signal caller Eli McLean (Clarkston, Mich. / Pontiac Notre Dame Prep).

Fourth Quarter
GVSU's Khalil Eichelberger scored on a eight-yard carry on the ensuing drive to extend the visitor's advantage to 56-3.

Eberly-Rodriguez had an 18-yard reception but that would be the lone first down on the drive for the Warriors.

Laker Josh Gorball made a 40-yard field goal, before Wayne State responded with an eight-play, 65-yard touchdown drive.  Senior Jeff Knight (Detroit, Mich. / U. of Detroit Jesuit) had receptions of 13 and 16 yards on the drive, with graduate student Max Nicklin (Davisburg, Mich. / Clarkston) catching a 22-yard scoring pass from McLean on third-and-10 for his first career touchdown.
