A 4-3 Triumph for Women's Tennis Caps Off Another Winning Weekend

The Warriors defeat Indiana (Pa.) in a neutral site contest. Shanice Weekes earns clinching win.

SANDUSKY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (6-0 overall) won its sixth consecutive match to begin the season, as the team claimed a 4-3 victory over Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) on Sunday afternoon. The match was played on a neutral court in Sandusky, Court 1 Tennis.

DOUBLES
The Warriors lost the doubles point for a second consecutive match, as IUP grabbed two of the three matches to secure the point.

The duo of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) started off the afternoon strong for WSU, winning their match at No. 1 doubles by a 6-4 score.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) fell at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, to Natalie Kmoskova and Joanna Stralka.

No. 3 doubles was a battle for the first point of the match, and IUP was able to come out ahead with a 7-6 (5) win from their doubles pairing of Idoia Huerta and Lydia Vlachou over the Green and Gold's Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England).

SINGLES
In similar fashion to last match, the Warriors won five of the six matches in singles play to clinch the match in Sandusky.

The Warriors fell into a 2-0 deficit with Komar's defeat at No. 2 singles. She lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to Kmoskova.

Wayne State received its first point with Szpakowska's win at the No. 4 spot, as she handled her opponent in strong fashion (6-3, 6-0).

WSU tied the overall match score on Ruyssen's 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Karolin Kirchtag at No. 1 singles.

IUP grabbed the lead (3-2) with their third and final point of the match at No. 3. Arafat was defeated there by a score of 6-4, 6-3 by Stralka.

Needing the final two points for victory, the Warriors received exactly that. Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich.) won the first set 6-2 and the second set 7-5 to win from the No. 6 spot, an impressive showing in her first action of the contest.

In the match-deciding battle, Weekes played strong and ultimately was victorious over her opponent at No. 5, 6-3, 7-5, to clinch the match for the Green and Gold.
