Softball Wins Twice On Thursday

WSU defeats Mary and Alliance by a combined 19-6.

LEESBURG, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad evened its season record at 8-8 with two wins on Thursday.  WSU defeated the University of Mary (3-13 overall) 7-1, then upended Alliance University (2-14 overall) 12-5.  The Warrior bats recorded 27 hits and 19 runs in the two victories.

GAME ONE RECAP
After the Marauders scored once in the bottom of the first it was all Wayne State after that.

WSU tied the game in the top of the second as senior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) reached on a throwing error, went to second on a single by sophomore center fielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada), and scored on a single by junior right fielder Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.).

The Warriors snapped a 1-1 deadlock in the third with a pair of runs.  Sophomore shortstop Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) had a leadoff single and scored on a double by junior designated player Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon).  After walks to senior third baseman Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.) and Hodder loaded the bases, Peru scored on a Mary miscue.

Wayne State extended its lead in the fifth with three runs.  Peru walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman left fielder Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.).  Hodder singled and stole second to put two runners in scoring position.  A Ruczynski single plated Peru, while Hodder scored later during a run down of Ruczynski.  Senior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) started a two-out rally with a double, and scored on a single by freshman second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).

In the top of the sixth with two outs, Hodder walked advancing pinch-runner Sydney Bogden (Shelby Township, Mich.  Utica Eisenhower) to second where she scored on a single by Ruczynski.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) tossed the first six innings allowing one earned run on three hits.  She struck out four and walked two.  Bonk pitched the final with one strikeout and one walk.

Hannah Chambers (1-5) was the first of three Mary hurlers.  The trio combined to allow seven runs (four earned) on 13 hits.  They struck out one and walked six.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Wrubel and Ruczynski each had three hits, with Ruczynski driving in a team-best two runs.  Miller and Hool had two hits apiece.

LEADING THE MARAUDERS
Francesca Villaneda drove in the lone Mary run with a double.

GAME TWO RECAP
For the second straight game the Warriors fell behind early as AU's Janelle Adams had a one-out RBI triple in the top of the first.

Miller led off the bottom of the frame with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, and both Miller and Hool moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Wrubel after Hool had walked.  Bonk's pop up into shallow right field was caught by the second baseman who threw to second as Miller scored, while Hool kept running and scored on the play as well.

WSU made it 4-1 with two runs in the bottom of the second.  O'Donnell, Hodder and Ruczynski all singled to load the bases with zero outs.  Paolatto's sacrifice fly plated O'Donnell before a walk to Miller re-loaded the bases.  With two outs, Wrubel worked a seven-pitch walk to force in Hodder.

Alliance grabbed a 5-4 lead in the top of the third with four unearned runs on two hits and three Wayne State errors.

WSU knotted the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the third as Peru walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by O'Donnell.  She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Hodder.

The Warriors took the lead for good in the fourth as Wrubel had a leadoff single and Bonk reached on a fielding error.  A sacrifice bunt by Peru moved both runners up a base.  With two outs, Hodder delivered a two-run double to left center snapping the 5-5 deadlock.

Wayne State increased its advantage to 10-5 with a trio of runs in the fifth.  Paolatto had an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  A bunt single by Miller put runners on the corners, before Miller stole second.  Hool's single through the left side scored Paolatto, while Wrubel's sacrifice fly plated Miller.  After Bonk walk, Hool stole third then scored on a single by Peru.

WSU completed the scoring with two runs in the sixth.  Ruczynski had a leadoff double and scored on a single by Paolatto.  A single by Wrubel moved Paolatto to third, where she scored on Bonk's sacrifice fly.
