Softball Swept By Ferris State In GLIAC Home Openers

Warriors fall 4-3 and 4-1 to the visiting Bulldogs.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (10-12 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) began conference play at home on Sunday by dropping both ends of a twinbill (4-3 and 4-1) to the visiting Ferris State Bulldogs (12-18 overall, 2-0 GLIAC).

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU scored in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 lead as junior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) singled to left on an 0-2 offering from FSU starter Catherine O'Donohue.  Senior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) advanced Miller to second with a sacrifice bunt, and Miller moved to third on a fly out.  Junior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) plated Miller with a two-out single to right center.

The Warriors extended their lead in the third as senior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) had a leadoff single on a 1-2 pitch.  After a pop out, Hodder doubled down the left field line to put two runners in scoring position.  After a lineout, Bonk's ground ball was misplayed allowing two unearned runs to score.

Ferris State pulled within a run with a pair of tallies in the top of the fifth.  A leadoff walk, followed by back-to-back singles loaded the bases.  The first run scored on a sacrifice fly by Kylie Winkels, with the second run scoring on a single by Kaitlyn Orme.

In the top of the seventh, the WSU reliever (Bonk) retired the first two batters before allowing a single to Orme on a 3-2 pitch.  Evelyn Blood then singled up the middle on 2-2 pitch after pinch-runner Maddie Gkekas had stolen second base tying the game at 3-3.  Following a hit by pitch, FSU recorded the go-ahead run on a WSU miscue.

Sophomore Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) worked a leadoff walk to start the seventh, but she could get no further than second base.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed two earned runs on five hits in five innings.  She struck out one and walked four.  Bonk (3-3) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in two innings.  She struck out two and walked two.

O'Donohue allowed three runs (one earned) in 4.1 innings on six hits.  She struck out one and did not walk a batter.  Aubrie Lafferty (1-0) earned the win by tossing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.  She did not allow a hit, but walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Miller reached base three times on two hits and a walk and scored once.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Orme and Blood each had two hits and an RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
FSU scored once in the top of the first on a one-out double by Josie Prince followed by an RBI single from Winkels.

The Bulldogs increased their advantage to 3-0 in the third on a two-out single by Orme, a walk to Blood and a two-run double down the left field line on an 0-2 offering by Jadyn Joseph.

WSU scored once in the bottom of the third as Hodder had a two-out double, her team-leading 10th two-bagger of the season.  Sophomore shortstop Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) followed with an RBI single to center.

Wayne State had a golden chance to cut into its deficit in the fourth as the first three batters reached.  Senior third baseman Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.) and sophomore center fielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) had consecutive singles, before Josephson reached on an error.  However a shallow fly out and back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.
Ferris State re-gained its three-run margin in the fifth on a one-out double by Winkels, back-to-back infield singles by Orme and Blood and a sacrifice fly by Joseph.

The Warriors had runners on the corners with one out in the sixth on a double by Josephson and a single by freshman pitcher Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) but a pop out and fielder's choice ended the inning.

WSU stranded nine base runners in the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
Buckberger (4-3) allowed four earned runs on eight hits, while tossing a complete game.  She struck out four and walked one.

Kristie Gray started for FSU and pitched the first three innings.  She allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout.  Aryn Gallacher (6-5) notched the win in relief pitching the final four innings.  She held WSU scoreless on five hits with two strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Bonk had two hits, including a double.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
