Softball Blanked 4-0 To Start Series At Ohio Dominican

WSU limited to two singles.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball squad (2-4 overall) played its first game outdoors this spring and fell 4-0 at Ohio Dominican University (6-9 overall) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The host Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the first on back-to-back one-out singles with a stolen base for each runner in successive at bats.  Olivia Congleton delivered a two-out, two-run single to right center.

ODU added an insurance run in the third as they loaded the bases with zero outs on a pair of walks sandwiched around a bunt single.  A two-out hit by pitch made it 3-0.

Ohio Dominican extended its lead in the fifth on two singles and two walks.  It could have been worse except senior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) threw out a Panther would be base stealer.

The Warriors base runners were a one-out single in the third by sophomore shortstop Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan); senior third baseman Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.) reaching on a two-out Panther error in the fourth; freshman left fielder Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) was hit by a pitch leading off the fifth but was stranded at second; and junior designated player Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) had a two-out single in the sixth.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) fell to 0-3 this year, but lost for the second time that WSU was shutout.  She allowed four earned runs on eight hits and four walks, while striking out six.

Panther hurler Marlee Jacobs (4-2) blanked WSU on two hits.  She struck out five and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Bonk and Wrubel each had a single for WSU.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Alli Madden went 4-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases.  Four other ODU hitters each had a single.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play a twinbill at Ohio Dominican on Sunday to conclude the three-game weekend series.
