ASHLAND, Ohio -- In a game that saw a total of 22 runs scored on 31 hits, Ashland (26-11 overall) held on for the 14-8 win over Wayne State (27-7 overall) on Tuesday at Donges Field. Next up for the Warriors is more GLIAC play and a four-game series at Saginaw Valley State on Friday through Sunday.
Wayne State held a two-run lead, 8-6, heading to the bottom of the sixth inning before Ashland pushed across eight runs on five hits in the home half of that frame. The Eagles avenged their 5-4 10-inning loss to the Warriors just a week prior on April 11 at Harwell Field.
On the mound,
Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich. / Jonesville) got the start and threw the most of any WSU pitcher with two innings, five runs, two earned, on six hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Then came
Mitchell Mychajluk (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) with an inning and a third before giving way to
Ryan Szlachcic's (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville) 1.2 frames, but Szlachcic was saddled with the loss to fall to 1-1.
After those three came
Hector Jaimes (Trenton, Mich. / Detroit Western International) with two-thirds of an inning,
Gabe Nazelli (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) for an out,
TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake) with a frame, and
Cam Rosen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) for the final three outs.
Offensively, eight Warriors registered a hit, six of them had multiple base knocks, six scored a run, and four brought in a run, including three RBI for
Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) alone. Miller has been on a tear recently hitting .583 (14-for-24) in his last seven games with seven runs scored, four doubles, one home run, and seven driven in.
