Softball Splits At Regionally Ranked Northwood

NU wins opener 6-2; WSU claims nightcap 7-6.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball (15-23 overall) notched a road split on Thursday afternoon at regionally ranked Northwood University (28-19 overall).  The host Timberwolves won the opener 6-2 scoring five times in the bottom of the second.  The Warriors took game two 7-6 rallying from a 3-0 deficit, then scoring the tie-breaking run in the top of the seventh.

GAME ONE RECAP
NU's five-run second inning was aided by a two-run single from Jenna O'Berry and a three-run two-out home run by Ashley Ziel.

WSU answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third.  Junior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) had a one-out single up the middle, before senior Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) walloped a two-run home run on a 3-2 offering after falling behind 1-2 in the count.

Northwood scored once in the sixth to the complete the scoring.  Jillian Krawczak had a leadoff double and scored on a single by Haley Frank.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) pitched all six innings allowing six earned runs on seven hits.  She struck out five and walked five.

Haley Leister, the older sister of WSU women's basketball student-athlete Alyssa Leister, recorded the victory after allowing two earned runs on six hits.  She struck out four and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Hodder went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk, while Miller also had two hits.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
Seven different Northwood batters had one hit.

GAME TWO RECAP
Northwood scored twice in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Brynn Polega.

NU extended its lead to 3-0 the next inning on a sacrifice fly by Polega.

Wayne State started the fourth with back-to-back singles from Miller and Hodder.  Sophomore Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) was hit by a one-out pitch to load the bases.  Sophomore Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) smacked a grand slam home run after fouling off a 1-2 offering giving the Warriors a 4-3 advantage.

WSU increased its margin to 5-3 with consecutive two-out doubles in the fifth by Miller and Hodder.

Ruczynski was hit by a pitch leading off the sixth and was sacrificed to second by Wrubel.  A single by junior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) put two runners in scoring position as Bonk took second on the throw.  Freshman Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) produced an RBI single to left.

The Timberwolves scored three times in the bottom of the sixth on two walks, an RBI double by Frank, and a pair of unearned runs.

In the top of the seventh, Hodder doubled with one out and scored on a double by sophomore Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) snapping a 6-6 deadlock.

In the bottom of the inning, the first two Northwood batters reached on a single and a walk, before freshman Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) struck out the next three Timberwolves, all swinging.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk pitched the first 5.1 innings allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits.  She struck out three and walked three.  Batton earned the win by hurling 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.  She struck out four and walked two, while allowing one hit.

Emily Cox started for Northwood and surrendered five earned runs on five hits in 4.2 innings.  She struck out five and did not walk a batter.  Polega was tagged with the loss after allowing two earned runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.  Brittani Mutter retired both batters she faced, including one via a strikeout.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Hodder went 3-for-4 with two runs scored (including the game winner) and an RBI.  Miller contributed two hits, while Wrubel drove in four with the grand slam.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
Frank, Brittany Steimel and Gianna Fantin each had two hits.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play eight games in the next eight days to conclude the regular season.  The stretch run begins with a GLIAC doubleheader at Saginaw Valley State tomorrow (Friday, April 21) starting at 3 p.m.
