Softball Ends Season With Two Losses At Ferris State

WSU falls 8-5 and 6-5 in Big Rapids.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The 2023 Wayne State University softball season ended on Friday as the Warriors dropped a pair of contests, 8-5 and 6-5, at Ferris State University.  WSU finishes the year with a 16-30 overall record along with a 5-19 GLIAC mark.  FSU improved to 22-30 overall and 10-10 in the GLIAC.

WSU's two setbacks coupled with Parkside's sweep of Davenport means the Warriors did not qualify for the GLIAC Tournament.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first as senior catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) had a one-out single.  Senior third baseman Taryn Peru (Bath, Mich.) worked a two-out walk.  Both players moved up on a stolen base, before junior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) delivered a two-run single up the middle.

Wayne State extended its advantage to 3-0 in the top of the second as freshman left fielder Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) had a one-out single.  She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.), then scored on a single up the middle by senior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.).

The Bulldogs roared back with a four-run second inning which included a two-run double by Kaitlyn Fick, and a go-ahead RBI ground out by Kaitlyn Orme.

Ferris State increased its margin to 6-3 in the third as back-to-back singles and a ground out put two runners in scoring position.  Fick had an two-run single to right.

WSU tallied two runs in the fifth on a one-out double by senior utility player Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) and consecutive RBI doubles by sophomore right fielder Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) and Peru.

FSU's Kylie Winkels had a one-out triple in the fifth and scored on an RBI single by Amara Zukowski.

The game's final run came in the sixth on a single, a walk and an RBI single by Catherine O'Donohue.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) pitched the first three innings and allowed six runs on nine hits with one strikeout.  Classmate Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) hurled the final three innings allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Aryn Gallacher (10-9) notched the win despite allowing five runs on six hits in 4.2 innings.  She struck out one and walked one.  O'Donohue earned her third save by holding WSU scoreless over the final 2.1 innings on two hits and three walks.  She struck out two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Paolatto was the lone WSU batter with a multiple-hit effort, while Peru reached base three times via a double and two walks.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Winkels went 3-for-3 and scored three times, while Fick had two hits and four RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State snapped a scoreless deadlock with four runs in the top of the fourth.  Josephson had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Peru.  Bonk then smacked her second home run of the week giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead.  O'Donnell added a two-out single, and Hool greeted FSU reliever Mckenzie Cleland with a single.  Paolatto walked to load the bases before Miller plated two runs with a single.

WSU made it 5-0 in the fifth as Bonk had a two-out triple to right and scored on an RBI single by sophomore center fielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada).

Ferris State then scored the final six runs of the game for the victory.  Two two-out singles sandwiched around a walk produced the Bulldogs first run in the fifth.

FSU's run in the sixth inning came via a walk and two singles.

In the bottom of the seventh, back-to-back one-out singles preceded four consecutive walks by Bonk to tie the game at 5-5.  Batton then entered the circle and walked the lone batter she faced.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk pitched 5.1 innings allowing six run on seven hits and eight walks.  She struck out seven.

Kristie Gray started for FSU and allowed three runs in 3.2 innings on five hits.  Cleland faced four batters allowing one run on two hits and a walk.  Sophie Wisniski surrendered one run on five hits in 2.1 innings with one walk.  Mauri Viness (2-0) retired both batters she faced in the seventh to notch the victory.
