Wayne State Takes Three of Four at Purdue Northwest

Van Sicklen (pictured) scored three times and hit his first-career home run in the second inning.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (24-4 overall, 12-1 GLIAC) finished its regular-season series against Purdue Northwest (6-20 overall, 2-10 GLIAC) on Saturday with a 7-3 win and went 5-1 against the Pride in those six meetings. Next up, the Warriors will be at home for the first time in two weeks on Tuesday when they host Ashland for a 3 p.m. first pitch at Harwell Field.

Friday afternoon, Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich. / Yale) improved to 4-1 after lasting 7.2 innings on just 62 pitches. Korolden gave up three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts before giving way to the bullpen. In relief, Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) didn't allow a single hit in his inning and a third of work with only one free pass and two punchouts.

At the plate, Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) got the scoring started with his first career home run, a solo blast to left field in the second inning. That same frame, Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) put Wayne State up 2-0 with an RBI single to right that scored Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett).

Two innings later, Miller did the hitting himself when he doubled to left center and brought in Van Sicklen from second base. In the fifth, the score became 4-0 when Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) grounded into a double play, but CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) was able to touch home plate.

Two innings after that, Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) went deep to left with a solo shot, his second of the season, before Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton) hit one through the right side that forced in both Van Sicklen and Tanderys to make it a seven-run game, 7-0. The hosts did all of their damage after that including one run in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
