Wayne State Opens GLIAC Tournament with 6-4 Win Over Parkside

CJ Maury (pictured to the right) put WSU ahead for good with a two-run single in the seventh.

LANSING, Mich. -- In a game that saw four ties and two lead changes, the top-seeded Wayne State University baseball team (39-10 overall) escaped sixth-seeded Parkside (13-35), 6-4, on Thursday afternoon at Jackson Field. The Warriors now move on to face the loser of third-seeded Saginaw Valley State and fourth-seeded Grand Valley State on Friday at 3 p.m.

Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) and Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) started the rally with back-to-back walks. One out later, Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) made it a 4-4 game with an RBI single to left center. Then, CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) gave his team the two-run lead for good thanks to a base knock through the left side.

On the mound, Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) turned in a solid start with just one earned run given up on three hits in four innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

First out of the bullpen was Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) with two-and-a-third frames before giving way to the game's winner, Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.), who improved to 4-1 on the season. Sommers surrendered a single hit and punched out one in two-thirds innings.

Then, Wayne State turned to a pair of starters in Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) and Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson), who each threw one scoreless inning, and Kilander earned the first save of his career.

Five of the Warriors' six hits came from the two through five spots in the lineup (5-for-14, .357 average), including a multi-hit day from Maury in the five hole (2-for-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB).
