Football Falls 27-14 To Fourth-Ranked Ferris State

Defense limits the high-scoring Bulldog offense to 27 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football squad (0-6 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) fell 27-14 to fourth-ranked Ferris State University (5-1 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) in a weather-delayed game on Sunday.  FSU led 10-0 near the mid-point of the second quarter when play was halted on Saturday evening due to lightning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors garnered one first down on its opening possession before having to punt.  The Bulldogs drove 71 yards in seven plays with Mitchell Middleton connecting on a 24-yard field goal attempt with 8:45 remaining in the opening stanza.  The big play for the visitors was a 46-yard completion from Trinidad Chambliss to Cam Underwood to set up a first-and-goal.

Following a WSU interception, Ferris State turned the ball over on downs as the Wayne State defense held despite the Bulldogs taking over on the Warrior 37-yard line.

WSU used over five minutes of clock time for a 10-play drive but a 52-yard field goal attempt by Griffin Milovanski (Saugatuck, Mich.) was wide right.

Second Quarter
FSU extended its lead to 10-0 with a 13-play, 66-yard touchdown drive capped off by a one-yard plunge by Chambliss.  The Bulldogs converted a fourth-and-12 with an 18-yard pass to Markel King.

Two plays after the kickoff, the lightning was seen over Tom Adams Field prompting the suspension of the game until Sunday morning.

Wayne State earned a pair of first downs but sophomore punter Avery Burch (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge [Virginia-Lynchburg]) was able to pin FSU at its own 13-yard line.  On the fifth play of the ensuing drive, linebacker Carl Ware (Detroit, Mich. / Redford Union [Madonna]) intercepted Chambliss.

The Warriors were intercepted for the second time three plays later.  Ferris State had a nine-play, 63-yard drive concluding on a one-yard touchdown pass from Chambliss to Brady Rose with four seconds left before intermission.

Third Quarter
The WSU defense stuffed Chambliss on a fourth-and-one from the Bulldog 40 on the opening drive of the second half.

It took the Wayne State offense just six plays to capitalize.  Sophomore quarterback Champion Edwards (Los Angles, Calif. / American Fork, Utah [El Camino CC]) connected for 14 yards with senior wide receiver JoShawn Lewis (Lorton, Va. / South County [Gannon]) on a third-and-seven to keep the drive alive.  Junior running back D'Marco Singleton (Marysville, Mich.) scampered around right end for 14 yards and a touchdown on third-and-one pulling the Warriors within 17-7.

FSU went three-and-out before the WSU offense went 87 yards in eight plays, aided by three 15-yard penalties on the Bulldogs in a four-play span for a personal foul, unsportsmanlike conduct and pass interference.  Edwards tossed a seven-yard scoring strike to senior wide out Myles McKatherine (Chicago, Ill. / St. Rita of Cascia [College of DuPage]) on a third-and-four cutting the Wayne State deficit to three at 17-14 with 3:09 remaining in the third period.

Ferris State answered with a two-play, 75-yard scoring drive as Chambliss gained 73 yards on a keeper followed by a two-yard touchdown run from Zak Ahern.

Fourth Quarter
Following a Wayne State punt, the Bulldogs completed the scoring with a seven-play, 51-yard drive with Middleton making a 28-yard field goal.

TEAM STATS
