Football Upended On Homecoming 37-10 By Saginaw Valley State

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football squad (0-8 overall, 0-4 GLIAC) trailed 6-3 with less than 90 seconds to go in the first half, but visiting Saginaw Valley State University (6-2 overall, 3-1 GLIAC), ranked No. 38 this week by the AFCA, scored 10 points in 71 seconds and went on to defeat the Warriors 37-10 on WSU's 87th Homecoming.

It was also the 56th anniversary of the first game at the WSU Football Stadium - a 61-29 triumph over Washington (Mo.) University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Wayne State garnered one first down but had to punt on its opening possession.

The Cardinals drove 75 yards in nine plays with Terrence Brown, Jr. scoring on a one-yard plunge.  The big play on the drive was a 30-yard completion from Mason McKenzie to Tylor McCoon to set up a first-and-goal.  The PAT attempt was blocked by sophomore Anthony Walk, Jr. keeping the score at 6-0.

The Warriors earned a pair of first downs on a nine-yard reception by freshman XaVior Tyus (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) on a third-and-eight and an 11-yard catch by senior JoShawn Lewis (Lorton, Va. / South County [Gannon]).  Junior quarterback Rob Brazziel (Chicago, Ill. / Taft H.S. in Cincinnati [College of DuPage]) was making his first start as a Warrior.

After another WSU punt, SVSU had to punt early in the second period.

Second Quarter
Each team had to punt on its next possession, but Wayne State was able to flip the field based on a 54-yard punt by sophomore Avery Burch (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge [Va. - Lynchburg]) compared to a 13-yard punt by McCoon.

The Warrior offense was able to drive to the Cardinal five-yard line before the drive stalled.  Graduate student Griffin Milovanski (Saugatuck, Mich.) equaled the school record for career field goals (39) with his 23-yard kick, which pulled WSU within 6-3.

After a three-and-out by the SVSU offense, the Wayne State punt was blocked giving the Cardinals the ball at the WSU 28-yard line.  McKenzie scored on a 10-yard keeper with 1:21 left before intermission. The PAT by Rodrigo Castaneda extended the guests advantage to 13-3.

On the second play following the kickoff, Brazziel was sacked by Leonard Henry IV, who forced a fumble that he recovered at the Warrior 17-yard line.

Castaneda concluded the first half scoring with a 33-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining prior to halftime.

Third Quarter
Saginaw Valley State began the second half with a 12-play, 75-yard drive in 5:27.  McKenzie tossed a 22-yard scoring pass to Joseph Walker, who earlier on the drive hauled in a 20-yard completion on third-and-seven.

The next four drives (two by each school) were all three-and-out.

A WSU drive that carried over into the fourth stanza also concluded with a punt.

Fourth Quarter
Saginaw Valley State increased its margin to 30-3 with a 52-yard scamper by Brown on the fourth play of the ensuing drive.

Wayne State responded with an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that included a 29-yard reception by junior tight end John Rayba (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Stoney Creek).  The scoring play was a eight-yard catch by Lewis with 8:28 left in the game.

SVSU completed the scoring with a five-yard touchdown run by Austin Bills which concluded a 13-play, 75-yard drive.

TEAM STATS
Saginaw Valley State had a 451-168 advantage in total offense, including a 286-44 margin in rushing yards.  SVSU went 7-of-14 on third down, compared to WSU's 3-of-11.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tyus rushed for a team-high 70 yards, while Brazziel completed 11-of-26 passes for 124 yards and one touchdown.  He was sacked five times.  Lewis led WSU with four receptions and 36 receiving yards.  Freshman Kejuan Houston (Belleville, Mich.) and graduate student Brayden Vredeveld (Hudsonville, Mich.) tied for team-high honors with seven tackles, with Vredeveld contributing a 19-yard sack and a quarterback hurry.
