Baseball Opens Season with Victory Over Hillsdale in 12 Innings

The Warriors and Chargers will play games two and three of the series on Saturday.

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -- Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)) tripled to lead off the top of the 12th inning and Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) brought him home with a sacrifice fly to give the Wayne State University baseball team a 6-5 season-opening victory over Hillsdale.

Ahead 4-0 through six frames, the Warriors seemed to be in complete control.  Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) opened the scoring with a two-run single in the third that allowed CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) and Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) to touch home plate.

Two innings later, Hitzelberger was at it again, this time with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Maury.  Then in the sixth, WSU stretched the margin to four as McGuire doubled in Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)) all the way from first base.

The Chargers got on the scoreboard in the seventh with an RBI groundout before WSU made it a four-run affair again in the eighth.  Dale hit a solo home run to right, the redshirt fifth year's first blast since May 20, 2022 and third as a Warrior.

On the mound, Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) was saddled with a no decision after 7.1 innings pitched, two runs, one earned, only one walk and 10 strikeouts.  Those 10 punchouts tied Fitzpatrick's career high set on May 5, 2022 at Parkside.

HC hit a two-run shot in the eighth and pushed across two more in the ninth to send the game to extras.  The Chargers then went three up, three down in the 10th, 11th and 12th innings thanks to some stellar bullpen work by the Warriors.

Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) was first out of that pen in the eighth, but was unable to retire a batter.  Then, David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) gave up two runs, both earned, in an inning of work.  Lastly, making the first appearance of his career, Evan Langlois (Brownstown, Mich. / Woodhaven) was brilliant.  Langlois picked up the victory with 3.2 shutout frames, just one hit allowed, one free pass and a pair of strikeouts.

Next up on the schedule, Wayne State and Hillsdale will play games two and three of the series on Saturday with the first pitch in game one slated for 12 p.m.
