Baseball Falls in Series Finale to Hillsdale, 8-6

The Chargers hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth.

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (3-1 overall) led Hillsdale (1-3 overall) 5-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning before the Chargers battled back and defeated the Warriors in walk-off fashion, 8-6.  Next up, WSU will be in Chillicothe, Ohio on Friday through Sunday to face Tiffin for a four-game set inside VA Memorial Stadium.

Wayne State scored in each of the first three innings and it started with Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) singling in CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) in the top of the first.  The next frame, Maury did his damage with the bat and doubled in Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland).

Then, in the third, the Warriors tacked on three more runs as Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. / Roseville (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)) scored Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) with a triple, Dale touched home plate on Mason McGuire's (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)) groundout and Tobel pushed across Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) with a base knock.

From that point until the bottom of the ninth, Hillsdale proceeded to score six runs while Wayne State's sixth and final run came in the seventh thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Tobel bringing in Hatzigeorgiou.

On the mound, Ashton Potts (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson (Kellogg CC)) threw five strong while giving up two earned runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts.  First out of the bullpen and making his collegiate debut was Coy Plummer (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) with an inning and a third of scoreless baseball.

Next up was Cam Rosen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) who was responsible for two runs, one earned, on one hit with a punchout.  Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) was fourth up, but set down just one batter.  WSU's last arm of the day and also making the first appearance of his college career was Will DeMasse (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota).  DeMasse surrendered the two-run shot along with another hit in a frame pitched with one strikeout.
