CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- After not playing on Saturday due to inclement weather, the Wayne State University baseball team (6-1 overall) swept a Sunday doubleheader against Tiffin (0-4 overall). The Warriors did so with scores of 5-4 in game one and 12-4 in the nightcap. Next up, the Warriors and Dragons will try to make up Saturday's game at some point this week.
GAME ONE RECAP
Wayne State scored all five of its runs in the top of the third inning and it started with
Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) coming in on a wild pitch.
Three batters later,
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) made it 2-0 after an RBI single to left field that pushed across
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS).
Following the second out of the frame,
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)) touched home on
Logan Van Sicklen's (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
Then,
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)) doubled in both Hatzigeorgiou and
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) thanks to a knock to left.
Tiffin proceeded to tally two runs in the home half of the third and two more in the sixth before stranding the game-tying run at second in the seventh.
Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) improved to 2-0 after 5.1 innings pitched, five hits, four runs, two earned, three walks and seven strikeouts. Out of the bullpen,
Evan Langlois (Brownstown, Mich. / Woodhaven) notched his first career save with an inning and two-thirds of work, only one hit allowed and a pair of punchouts.
GAME TWO RECAP
The story in the nightcap was Wayne State scoring 10 runs in the third inning along with two more in the fifth. That third frame though, 15 batters came to the plate for the Warriors with nine of them reaching base via hit and two others doing so thanks to an error.
For the game as a whole, four WSU hitters registered multiple hits including Hitzelberger (4-for-5, 2 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI),
Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North - 2-for-4, 2-R HR, 3 R, 2 RBI), Hatzigeorgiou (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Dale (2-for-5, 1 R).
That blast for Hill was the first of his career while
Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) hit a three-run shot in the third, his second of the season.
On the mound,
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich. / Lansing CC) is now 2-0 after 5.0 innings pitched, eight hits, three earned runs, one free pass and six strikeouts.
In relief,
TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake) gave up an earned run in a frame of action before
Avery Mona (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / University of Detroit Jesuit (Central Michigan)) threw a scoreless seventh for his first collegiate appearance.
