Softball Wins Twice on Day 3 Of Spring Break Trip

Bonk and Long combine to allow just one run in 14 innings.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (6-7 overall) won a pair of low-scoring games on Tuesday to reach the halfway point of its spring break trip.  WSU edged Bloomfield College (2-7 overall) 3-1 in the opener, then blanked Quincy (10-12 overall) 2-0 in the nightcap.

GAME 1 RECAP
The game was scoreless until the Warriors pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth.  Graduate student Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) had a leadoff single on a 3-2 offering, and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Freshman Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) singled through the left side on a 2-2 pitch to plate Hodder with the game's first run.  Forman, who had taken second on the throw home, scored on an RBI single by senior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.), who had just fouled off a 3-2 delivery.

The Bears pulled within a run in the bottom of the frame as Naya Olacio doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right by Anna Wilson.

Wayne State added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as sophomore pinch-hitter Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) reached on an error with two outs.  Senior Kiley Lewandowski (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Lincoln) drew a five-pitch walk to move sophomore Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) into scoring position.  Hool was able to scamper home from second when Hodder's ground ball was misplayed by the BC first baseman.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) notched her first victory since April 21, 2023, by limiting the Bears to one run on four hits in seven innings.  She struck out 10 and walked 2.

Jillian Holmes (0-2) started for Bloomfield and left in the fourth after the first three WSU batters singled and two had scored.  Kate Juskiewicz tossed 3.2 innings allowing just one unearned run on two hits.  She struck out one and walked two.  Rayn Romero retired one of the two batters she faced.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Miller was the only WSU batter to reach base twice (hit and a walk) and drove in a run.

LEADING THE BEARS
Olacio went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

GAME 2 RECAP
In a pitcher's duel that saw each team only record three hits, Wayne State scored the game's only two runs in the bottom of the first for the 2-0 triumph.

Hodder singled on a 3-2 pitch after fouling off a pair of two-strike offerings with one out.  Miller walked on the sixth pitch of her at bat to move Hodder to second.  After an infield fly out, Forman laced a two-run triple to right center scoring both Hodder and Miller.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) improved to 4-2 by winning her third straight start.  In today's contest, she limited the Hawks to just six base runners (three hits, two walks and an error), while striking out six.  During her win streak, Long has struck out 20 and walked five in 21 innings, while allowing four earned runs on 16 hits.

Abbey Hults (5-5) went the distance for Quincy allowing two earned runs on three hits in six innings with three strikeouts and three walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Forman had two hits and both of WSU's RBI.

LEADING THE HAWKS
Lindsey Fischer reached base twice via a single and a walk.
