HAMMOND, Ind. -- Facing Davenport (6-17 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) to open GLIAC play on Saturday, the Wayne State University baseball team (13-6 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) picked up right where it left off from a season ago. The Warriors swept the Panthers thanks to scores of 12-0 and 6-2 with a doubleheader at Purdue Northwest (1 p.m. eastern) coming up on Sunday.
GAME ONE RECAP
Wayne State ace
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport), who improved to 4-1, set the tone with a complete-game shutout, his 11th career instance going the distance and first time this season. The right-hander surrendered only two hits, walked one and struck out 10. That effort marks four out of five starts for Fitzpatrick this season with at least 10 punchouts, something he did just once in his first four seasons.
Offensively, all nine of the Warrior starters both scored a run and registered a hit, including four with multiple base kocks. Those four were
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)),
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS),
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) and
Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline). McGuire,
Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) and Tuccinardi each brought in a pair of runs while Hitzelberger pushed three across.
GAME TWO RECAP
Trailing Davenport 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Wayne State's Ray came in on a throwing error by the catcher to deadlock the score at 1-1.
After the Panthers took the lead back, 2-1 in the top of the seventh, the Warriors put up a five spot in the home half of that frame.
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)) started the scoring with a double down the right-field line that forced in
Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering). Then, Hitzelberger doubled in both Dale and
Nate Crossman (Canton, Mich. / Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard) to give his team the lead for the first time.
WSU's two insurance runs were notched when the next batter,
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford) also doubled in a pair, this time Hitzelberger and Maury.
On the mound,
Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) stayed unbeaten at 5-0 thanks to seven innings pitched, two runs allowed, only one earned, on four hits with two free passes and six strikeouts.
Evan Langlois (Brownstown, Mich. / Woodhaven) handled the final two frames nearly flawlessly with one hit given up, no walks and a punchout.
