DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (17-7 overall, 6-1 GLIAC) bounced back nicely on Friday afternoon to sweep Parkside (10-12 overall, 0-5 GLIAC) at Harwell Field, 6-2 and 10-1. Next up, the Warriors will be at Grand Valley State on Saturday for a double dip beginning at 1 p.m. in Allendale.
GAME ONE RECAP
Parkside was on the board first thanks to a sacrifice fly in the top of the third.
The next inning, Wayne State put up the first of three two spots in a row. In the fourth,
Owen Tuccinardi Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) doubled down the left-field line to bring in
Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North). Then,
Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) scored
Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) with a sacrifice fly of his own to left.
In the fifth, Hill did the hitting this time with an RBI double to right that pushed across
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.). The Warriors made it a 4-1 lead on an another RBI double by Tuccinardi that forced in Hill for his second run scored.
The Rangers' second run of the game came across in the top of the sixth before the hosts tacked on a pair of scores in the home half. Both
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)) and
Nate Crossman (Canton, Mich. / Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard) touched home plate following Hatzigeorgiou's base knock right back up the middle.
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich. (Lansing CC)) improved to 4-1 with his second consecutive complete-game victory. Marano surrendered just two earned runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts while throwing 98 pitches.
GAME TWO RECAP
Ashton Potts (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson (Kellogg CC)) set the tone on the mound with six innings pitched (83 pitches), only one earned run given up on six hits, one free pass, and three punchouts.
In relief,
Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket (Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College)),
Coy Plummer (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) and
Ryan Szlachcic (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville (Kalamazoo Valley CC)) took care of the seventh, eighth and ninth frames, respectively.
Offensively, Wayne State's 10 runs came in on 15 hits including two runs in the first, second and fourth innings before a four spot in the fifth. Four Warriors registered multiple hits and at the top of that category was
CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS). Maury went 4-for-4 with four runs scored, an RBI and a walk as well as a stolen base.
Maury was joined in the multi-hit department by Hatzigeorgiou (3-for-5, 1 R, 4 RBI).
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.; 2-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI) and
Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central (Oakland); 2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI).
