Softball Splits GLIAC Opener At Home Against Purdue Northwest

WSU was within one strike of a sweep.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (9-14 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) began conference play on Friday with a pair of home contests against Purdue Northwest (16-14 overall, 1-3 GLIAC).  The visiting Pride scored three times with two outs in the top of the seventh to rally for a 5-3 win in the opener.  The Warriors, after allowing a tying run in the top of the seventh, had a walk-off base hit in the bottom of the eighth to win the nightcap 4-3.

GAME 1 RECAP
WSU scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the first.  Junior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) had a leadoff single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by graduate student catcher Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) plus a throwing error.  Senior left fielder Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) ripped an RBI double over the left fielders head to make it 1-0.  Senior designated player Kiley Lewandowski (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Lincoln) followed with an RBI single through the left side.  Senior shortstop Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) grounded out to first and on the throw behind the runner at second, Favela scampered home.

The Pride tallied their first run in the third on a one-out single by Aubrey Shroyer, followed by a stolen base, and a two-out single by Selena Michko.

PNW pulled within a run in the sixth on three singles off the bats of Kylie Dugan, Michko and Emma Fair.

In the top of the seventh, Purdue Northwest's leadoff batter reached on a fielding error, and Shroyer had a bunt single.  After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, Michko reached on a bunt single to load the bases.  A force out at home, and two quick strikes on Fair had the Warriors within one strike of a victory, but Fair's check-swing single down the right field line plated a pair and Allison Arnold followed with an RBI single to complete the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) suffered the setback to fall to 4-7. She allowed five runs (two earned) on 11 hits in seven innings with four strikeouts to two walks.

Maddison Roop (9-4) went the distance for PNW and held WSU to three runs (one earned) on eight hits.  She struck out five and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Josephson went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Favela had two hits, an RBI and a double.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Michko went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, with Shroyer, Dugan, and Fair each recording two singles.

GAME 2 RECAP
The second game was not for the faint of heart.  WSU scored twice in the bottom of the second, before Purdue Northwest answered with two in the top of third.  The Warriors pushed across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth, only to have the Pride down to their final out even the score at 3-3, before the aforementioned walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth.

Freshman Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) began the bottom of the second with a double to center and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior pitcher Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon).  Freshman outfielder Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) plated Forman with an RBI single.  After a walk on a 3-2 offering to junior outfielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada), Mia Hool tagged on a pop up down the right field and scored when the throw across the diamond got past the third baseman.

In the top of the third, PNW's Myah Stuckey had a leadoff single and scored on a double by Shroyer.  After back-to-back strikeouts, Jessica DeBoer had an RBI single to knot the game at 2-2.

Forman had a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bonk, advanced to third on a single by Mia Hool, and scored on Ruczynski's sacrifice fly.

The Pride tied the game in the seventh on a leadoff single by Amanda DeBoer, a sacrifice bunt, and a two-out double by Shroyer.

Forman laced a 1-2 offering into center field leading off the bottom of the eighth.  Bonk laid down a bunt but the throw to second pulled the shortstop off the bag.  Lewandowski advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.  After fouling off two consecutive 2-2 pitches, Ruczynski ripped the next pitch through the right side scoring Forman with the winning run.  It was WSU's first walk-off win since Ruczynski had a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh against Davenport on April 8, 2023.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (3-7) allowed three earned runs on seven hits in eight innings.  She struck out five and walked one.

PNW's Gabby Paliska (6-7) surrendered four runs (two earned) on nine hits in 7.1 innings.  She struck out three and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Forman was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Favela and Mia Hool each had two hits.  Ruczynski went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Shroyer had two hits and two RBI, while scoring one run.
