Softball Falls Twice At No. 18-Grand Valley State

Warriors drop 9-1 and 4-3 decisions to the Lakers.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (15-26 overall, 7-13 GLIAC) lost both games of a GLIAC doubleheader Sunday at 18th-ranked Grand Valley State University (30-13 overall, 13-7 GLIAC).  GVSU won the opener 9-1 in six innings, before rallying for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

Game 1 Recap
The host Lakers scored twice in the bottom of the second to snap a scoreless tie.  A leadoff single by Liberti Fair followed by a WSU miscue and a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position.  Jasmine Mauk had an RBI single and Eliana Eiland followed with a sacrifice fly.

GVSU extended its lead to 3-0 in the fifth on back-to-back singles by Hannah Hollister and Morgan Spicer with Hollister scoring on Kelsey Komorous's sacrifice fly.

The Warriors got on the scoreboard in the sixth when senior Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) had a one-out single, stole second and scored on a two-out double by freshman Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.).

In the bottom of the sixth, five straight Grand Valley batters reached (double, single, two walks and an RBI single by Komorous) after the first hitter was retired to make it 5-1.  A throwing error by the Warriors allowed a sixth GVSU run to score.  Megan Koenigshof had an RBI single, while allowing Wayne State error allowed two Lakers to score to end the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) went the distance for WSU and allowed nine runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 5.2 innings.  She struck out two and walked three.

Ashley Platek (8-5) limited WSU to one run on five hits in six innings.  She struck out three and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Favela had two hits with Forman recording the lone extra-base hit and an RBI.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Spicer and Mauk each had two hits and an RBI, while Komorous drove in two.

Game 2 Recap
GVSU grabbed an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first.

Wayne State responded with a pair of runs in the third.  Junior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) had a leadoff single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon).  Freshman Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) delivered an RBI single.  A walk to junior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) and a single by Favela loaded the bases.  Senior Kiley Lewandowski (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Lincoln) plated the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.

The Lakers scored a trio of runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 advantage.  Hollister had a two-run single following a walk and an error, while Spicer notched an RBI single.

In the top of the sixth, graduate student Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) walked with one out and went to third on a single by Ruczynski.  Bonk's RBI single made it 4-3 with WSU again having runners on the corners.  Following a GVSU pitching change, the Warriors were unable to score the equalizer.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (6-11) limited Grand Valley to four runs (two earned) on four hits in six innings.  She struck out one and walked two.
