LANSING, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (29-21 overall) trailed No. 16 Saginaw Valley State (38-13 overall) 8-3 through eight innings on Friday afternoon at Jackson Field. A
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)) grand slam and
Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) RBI single tied the score at 8-8 before the Cardinals' GLIAC Player of the Year Hayden Jatczak walked it off in the bottom of the 10th with an RBI double over the outstretched glove of Dale in center field.
Saginaw Valley State struck first with an RBI fielder's choice in the second before
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) made it a 1-1 ballgame thanks to a solo home run to left center in the third. That bomb was Hatzigeorgiou's first since March 26 of last season against Parkside.
The Cardinals retook the lead in the home half of that frame and did so with a three spot to make it 4-1. In the fourth, the Warriors got two of those three back after
Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) singled in Hill and later scored when Hatzigeorgiou reached on a strike-three passed ball.
With the score at 4-3, SVSU tallied four runs in the seventh, all on doubles, to make it a five-run affair as mentioned above.
Fast forward to the top of the ninth where
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)) got the party started with a walk. One out later, Hatzigeorgiou and
Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) notched back-to-back singles to load up the bases for Dale's heroics and his team-leading sixth blast of the year.
Following the second out,
Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) doubled down the left field line,
Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) came in to pinch run for him and then came around on Hill's base knock to center.
After a zero in both the bottom of the ninth and top of the 10th, Saginaw Valley State's first two batters were retired in the bottom of the 10th. Following a two-out single to center came Jatczak's two-bagger.
Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) received a no decision after his six and two-thirds innings of work. Kilander surrendered eight runs, five earned, on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
In relief,
Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville (Jackson CC)) fell to 1-3 but was excellent out of the bullpen. In three frames, Miller gave up just the one unearned run on three hits with a free pass and two punchouts.
