Softball Season Ends With Two Setbacks In GLIAC Tournament

Josephson notches three hits and two walks over the two contests.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The 2024 Wayne State University softball season came to a close with a pair of losses on the opening day of the GLIAC Tournament.  The Warriors finish the year with a 17-30 overall record after falling 10-3 to Ferris State (25-25 overall) and 4-2 to Parkside (19-32 overall).

Game 1 Recap
Neither WSU or Ferris State could score in the first two innings, despite the Bulldogs loading the bases in both frames on three walks in each inning.

FSU batted around in the third scoring eight runs on eight hits plus two walks.  After a wild pitch scored the game's first run, Maddie Gkekas had a two-run double to left center.  Abby Meyer's RBI single made it 4-0, before Ella McDonald's infield hit increased the Ferris State advantage to 5-0.  Jadyn Joseph followed with a two-run double and Alexis Kozlowski contributed an RBI single.

Wayne State responded by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth.  Freshman Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) had a one-out double and after a single by junior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) and a walk to graduate student Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.), freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) cleared the bases with a three-run double to left.

The Bulldogs added two runs in the fourth on a triple by Meyer, a squeeze bunt by Joseph and WSU miscue.

The Warriors had two runners on in the fifth with one out, but couldn't score.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) worked two-plus innings and allowed five earned runs on three hits and eight walks.  She struck out three.  Long tossed the final four innings allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with one walk.

Aryn Gallacher (10-8) held WSU to three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.  She struck out one and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Junior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) had two hits, while both Forman and Hodder reached base twice via a hit and a walk.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Emma Gillard, Gkekas and Meyer each had two hits with Joseph driving in a team-best three runs.

Game 2 Recap
In an elimination game between the Warriors and the Rangers both squads left a runner in scoring position in the opening inning.

WSU had two runners on in the bottom of the second on a single by Forman and a walk to Hodder, but could not tally the game's first run.

The Warriors however did strike first in the bottom of the third as Josephson had a leadoff single and senior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) followed with an infield single.  Senior Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, before a sacrifice fly by senior Kiley Lewandowski (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Lincoln) plated Josephson.

Parkside scored the equalizer in the top of the fourth as Rylee Baetz had a leadoff double and scored on a two-out single by Haley Remington.

Wayne State got a runner into scoring position in both the fourth and the fifth, but could not get a key hit.

The Rangers snapped the 1-1 deadlock with a trio of runs in the seventh on a double by Remington, an RBI single by Toni Rodriguez, and single by Taylor Utrata along with a Warrior error and then a wild pitch combined with a wild throw.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hodder had a leadoff walk and moved to second on a ground out.  Josephson walked but pinch-runner Lauren Fritz (Commerce, Mich. Waterford Kettering (Oakland CC)) was thrown out trying to advance to third.  Favela then scored Josephson with a single to right.  With two runners in scoring position, a fly out ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits in seven innings.  She struck out five and walked one.

Ellie Curtis notched the victory after limiting WSU to two earned runs on four hits in 6.2 innings.  She struck out one and walked six.  Olivia Fee earned the save after facing two batters and allowing one hit and recording the game's final out.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Josephson went 1-for-2 with two walks and both runs scored, while Favela had two hits and drove in a run.  Hodder walked twice in the game and three times on the day to equal the school record for walks in a season with 28.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Baetz and Remington each had two hits and run scored.
