Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over PNW; Fitzpatrick Tosses Perfect Game One

The Warriors will look to sweep the season series against the Pride on Sunday in the regular-season finale.

DETROIT -- Perfection.  In the final home start of his illustrious career, redshirt-senior right-hander Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) achieved it in game one against Purdue Northwest (17-28 overall, 7-22 GLIAC) on Saturday.  Fitzpatrick retired all 21 batters that he faced and Wayne State (29-18 overall, 18-11 GLIAC) won 3-0 before taking the nightcap 8-3 for the doubleheader sweep.  The Warriors will look for a perfect season series against the Pride on Senior Day Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
Fitzpatrick, the program's all-time wins leader (31-8), improved to 8-2 on the season while needing just 75 minutes of real time and a mere 64 pitches to do so.  The NCAA's official record book tracks perfect games back to 1957 and Wayne State hasn't accounted for one since then.  The Warriors' most-recent no-hitter was a combined effort and came on March 2, 2019 with six different pitchers taking the mound.

Scoring wise, Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) scored Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. (Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC)) with a sacrifice fly to right field in the fifth inning before Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) and Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth.  That blast for Hill was his second of the season while Van Sicklen is tied for the team lead (Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.), Dale) with five.  CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) was the lone Warrior with multiple hits as he went 2-for-3 with a walk in the leadoff spot.

GAME TWO RECAP
Purdue Northwest struck first with a run in the top of the first before Wayne State made it a tie game in the home half.  Hill fouled out to deep left field in foul territory to bring in Maury from third with a sacrifice fly.

The Warriors then put up a three spot in the fourth to take their first lead of the game.  Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) forced in Dale with a sac fly to right center, Maury doubled in Van Sicklen and another sac fly off the bat of Ray to center allowed Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central (Oakland)) to touch home plate.

In the fifth with Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton (Mott CC)) on, Dale went deep with a two-run shot to left, the second deep ball in his last four outings.  WSU tacked on two more in the sixth when Hill doubled in both Paulina and Ray thanks to a double to center.

Also making the final home start of his career, Seth Marano (Canton, Mich. (Lansing CC)) was brilliant while improving to 6-3.  Marano surrendered one unearned run on five hits through 7.2 innings pitched with one walk and four strikeouts.

In relief, David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) handled the final four outs with two earned runs given up on two hits, no free passes and two punchouts.
