Football Falls At Truman State After Bulldogs Strong Second Half

TSU scored 28 consecutive points after halftime.

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Wayne State University football (0-4 overall) played its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday at Truman State University (1-3 overall) with the Bulldogs prevailing by a 31-17 score.  The Warriors led 10-3 at intermission, but allowed 28 consecutive second half points in the setback.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
WSU won the coin toss and elected to receive.  The Warriors drove 49 yards in 8:05 using 14 plays with graduate student Griffin Milovanski (Saugatuck, Mich.) connecting on a 43-yard field goal attempt for an early 3-0 lead with 6:51 remaining in the first quarter.  The big play on the drive was a 14-yard reception by junior Manny Harris (Kankakee, Ill. / Bishop McNamara) on second-and-13.  Wayne State converted two third-down opportunities on the drive.  It was Milovanski's 36th career field goal, and 11th consecutive made three-pointer from inside 50 yards.

After allowing one first down, WSU forced a Bulldog punt.  The Warrior offense garnered two first downs but had to punt.

Second Quarter
On the third play of the ensuing drive, junior safety Elijah Fowlkes (Cleveland, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) forced a fumble that was recovered by graduate student linebacker Carl Ware (Detroit, Mich. / Redford Union [Madonna]) at the TSU 37.

Wayne State went 37 yards in six plays with redshirt freshman running back XaVior Tyus (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) scoring on a nine-yard scamper on fourth-and-one.  It was Tyus' first collegiate touchdown, and WSU's first touchdown of the first half this season.

Truman State answered with a 28-yard field goal by Vinnie Calruso on the ensuing drive that capped off a 10-play, 54-yard drive in 4:38.

Each team had to punt on its next drive.

Third Quarter
Truman State took the second half kickoff and went 64 yards in nine plays with Denim Cook scoring on eight-yard carry.  The PAT by Calruso tied the game at 10-10.  Following a WSU punt, it took the Bulldogs seven plays to go 56 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.  Cook hauled in a 11-yard scoring pass on third-and-four to put the hosts up 17-0.

Wayne State managed one first down, but the Warrior punt was returned 80 yards for a touchdown.

Fourth Quarter
WSU then went 61 yards on the ensuing possession but a third down interception ended that drive.

The Bulldogs drove 72 yards in 10 plays with quarterback Dylan Hair scoring on a two-yard keeper on fourth-and-goal.

Wayne State scored a late touchdown on a 10-yard reception by junior tight end John Rayba (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Stoney Creek) off a pass from sophomore signal caller Champion Edwards (Los Angeles, Calif. / American Fork, Utah [El Camino C.C.]), which completed a 12-play, 84-yard drive.

TEAM STATS
Truman State had a 333-308 edge in total offense, including 195 to 128 on the ground.  WSU led in time of possession.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Senior Jeremiah Sterling, Jr. (Benton Harbor, Mich. / St. Joseph [Olivet]) led WSU with 46 rushing yards on 13 attempts.  Edwards completed 22-of-30 passes for 167 yards with one touchdown and one interception.  Harris caught a game-high eight passes for a team-best 43 yards.
