COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's fencing squad earned three wins at the OSU Duals, hosted by The Ohio State University on Sunday, October 12, at the French Field House.
The Green and Gold found success against the University of Michigan (20-4), Purdue University (20-4), and Cleveland State University (19-6), while being bested by the event's host, Ohio State, 18-9.
EPEE
Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary / Vörösmarty Mihály) and
Salma Abdrabou (Cairo, Egypt / Dar El Tarbiah IGCSE) were the two WSU student-athletes to compete in the epee.
Galfalvy notched an impressive 10-1 bout record, topping each of her opponents from U of M, OSU, and CSU, while tallying a 2-1 mark in bouts with Purdue.
Abdrabou had a strong showing as well, garnering a 9-2 ledger that included 3-0 performances against the Wolverines and Boilermakers.
SABRE
Four student-athletes saw action in the sabre for Wayne State. Those four were
Shriya Bangalore(Frisco, Texas / Centennial),
Mikhala Rivers (Maple Grove, Minn. / DeLaSalle),
Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower [Macomb CC]), and
Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem).
Bangalore collected a 4-3 bout record that included 2-0 marks in competitions against Michigan and the Vikings, while suffering three losses to individuals from Ohio State.
Rivers secured a 4-3 overall mark, including a pair of 2-0 performances in bouts with student-athletes from U of M and CSU.Â
Byars went 2-2 during the event, producing a 1-0 effort vs. members of the U of M squad, while adding one more win over a student-athlete from Cleveland State.
Siddiqui competed in three bouts, falling in each.
FOIL
Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy / Liceo Linguistico Niccolò Machiavelli) and
Anabella Acurero Gonzalez (Valencia, Venezuela / Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel) were the two Warriors to appear in the foil.
Mancini notched an unblemished 5-0 record just one day after compiling a 10-0 performance during the OSU Open.
Acurero Gonzalez tallied a 3-2 mark while earning wins against fencers from Cleveland State and Ohio State.
UP NEXT
The WSU women's fencing team will once more be in Columbus, Ohio, next month (November 8-9) for the OSU Elite Invitational.
