Football Suffers 28-7 Setback At Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University football team (0-8 overall, 0-4 GLIAC) Suffered a 28-7 setback at Saginaw Valley State University (5-3 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
WSU took the opening kickoff and garnered two first downs on penalties before having a 49-yard field goal attempt blocked.  The Cardinals went 62 yards in eight plays with Mason McKenzie completing a 11-yard scoring toss to Terrence Brown, Jr. on a third-and seven play with 8:47 left in the period.

The next three drives (two for WSU and one for SVSU) all ended in punts.

Second Quarter
The first two drives of the second stanza also concluded with punts.  SVSU had a fourth-and-four from the WSU 34 but McKenzie was sacked by junior linebacker Logan McGraw (Wyandotte, Mich. / Roosevelt [Hutchinson C.C.]).

Continuing with the punt theme, the next three drives (two by WSU and one by SVSU) ended in punts, prior to Saginaw Valley State covering 39 yards in six plays with McKenzie scoring on an 11-yard quarterback draw.

Following a Warrior punt, redshirt freshman cornerback Wendell Smith (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield A&T) intercepted a pass inside the WSU 40 yard line.  It was Smith's first official career interception after his previous pick was negated by a defensive penalty earlier in the season.

Saginaw Valley held a 178-69 edge in total offense, including a 111-(-18) edge in rushing yards.  There were nine punts in the opening 30 minutes, with redshirt freshman Dove Eitzen (Blissfield, Mich.) notching six punts.

Third Quarter
SVSU extended its lead to 21-0 with a five play, 75-yard drive following the second half kickoff.  McKenzie scored on a 28-yard keeper.

McKenzie scored on a one-yard plunge to cap a nine-play, 81-yard drive after a Warrior punt to increase the Cardinal lead to 28-0 with just under four minutes left in the period.

Fourth Quarter
Saginaw Valley State drove to the WSU two-yard line, but penalties preceded a missed 27-yard field goal.

The Wayne State offense converted two fourth play opportunities on the ensuing drive and went 80 yards in 12 plays with sophomore quarterback Justin Cox (Akron, Ohio / Akron East) tossing a 10-yard touchdown pass to redshirt freshman Donovan Isaac (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Waterford Mott).

Redshirt freshman Wendell Smith recovered the onside kick, but the Warriors were unable to get in the red zone before Cox was sacked on fourth down.

TEAM STATS
The Cardinals held a 398-157 advantage in total offense, including a 222-23 edge in rushing yards.  WSU went 0-for-14 on third downs, but converted two of four fourth-down chances.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Graduate student D'Vaun Bentley (Detroit, Mich. / Loyola [Lawrence Tech]) rushed for a team-high 22 yards.  Junior quarterback Champion Edwards (Los Angeles, Calif. / American Fork, Utah [El Camino C.C.]) passed for 89 yards on 11-of-18, while Cox completed 7-of-17 passes for 45 yards and one touchdown.  Redshirt senior Angel Carrillo (Atascosa, Texas / Southwest [Livingstone]) hauled in seven passed for 64 yards.  McGraw and senior Martell Williams (Hillside, Ill. / Proviso [Norfolk State]) tied for the team lead with seven tackles each, with McGraw notching 2.5 tackles for loss.
