Women's Fencing Concludes OSU Elite Invitational

COLUMBUS -- The Wayne State University women's fencing squad wrapped competition at The Ohio State University's Elite Invitational on Sunday, November 9, at the French Field House.

WSU collected a 1-1 record on day two for an overall ledger of 2-4 on the weekend.  The Green and Gold earned wins over the Air Force Academy (15-12) and Cleveland State University (16-9), while falling to OSU (16-11), the University of North Carolina (18-9), Denison University (15-12), and Harvard University (22-5).

FOIL
On the second day of action, Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy / Liceo Linguistico Niccolò Machiavelli) and Anabella Acurero Gonzalez (Valencia, Venezuela / Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel) represented WSU in the foil weapon.

Mancini tallied a 3-2 mark, going 2-0 against CSU and 1-2 vs. Harvard.  The senior nabbed a 13-4 record during the invitational.

Acurero Gonzalez garnered a 3-2 ledger as well, earning a pair of victories in bouts with the Vikings and one more win against Harvard for a 13-4 mark on the weekend.

EPEE
In the epee, Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary / Vörösmarty Mihály) and Salma Abdrabou (Cairo, Egypt / Dar El Tarbiah IGCSE) both saw action for the Green and Gold.

Galfalvy and Abdrabou each notched 3-2 marks on the second day competition, with each grabbing two wins during bouts against the Vikings along with one more vs. the Crimson.  The pair of juniors each notched a 13-4 record across the weekend.

SABRE
Four student-athletes competed for Wayne State in the sabre weapon, as Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower [Macomb CC]), Shriya Bangalore (Frisco, Texas / Centennial), Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem), and Mikhala Rivers (Maple Grove, Minn. / DeLaSalle) all participated at Ohio State.

Bangalore posted a 1-3 ledger on the second day, with the lone win coming against Cleveland State in the team's final contest of the event.  The freshman finished with a 3-10 ledger at the tournament

Siddiqui earned her first bout win of the weekend against Harvard, ending the event with a 1-12 overall record.

Rivers fell in each of her five bouts on Sunday, finishing with a 3-10 mark during the Invitational.

Byars competed in a pair of bouts on Sunday, being bested in both.  The graduate student earned a 2-10 ledger on the weekend.

UP NEXT
The WSU women's fencing team will next be in action on Saturday, January 31, at Northwestern's Schiller Duals.  The event will take place at the Ryan Fieldhouse and will span over two days.
