Football Upended 48-14 At Roosevelt

Arlington Heights, Ill. -- The Wayne State University football team (0-10 overall, 0-6 GLIAC) fell 48-14 at Roosevelt University (2-7 overall, 1-5 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at Morris Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The host Lakers took the opening kickoff and drove 82 yards in nine plays to take an early 7-0 lead.  Running back Cam Davis took a screen pass from Tony Chahino 21 yards on a third-and-goal for the game's first score.

After the Warriors were stopped on fourth-and-one, junior safety Kelly Matthews (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge [Concordia, Mich.]) intercepted a Chahino pass in the end zone.

Second Quarter
On the first play of the period, WSU true freshman signal caller Dylan Kress (Aurora, Ont. / St. Andrew's College Prep) was intercepted in the end zone.

RU went 80 yards in five plays with Jack Young, Jr. hauling in a 43-yard touchdown pass from Chahino.

The next five drives (three by WSU, and two by Roosevelt) all ended in a punt.

The Lakers extended their advantage to 21-0 with a eight play, 87-yard drive culminating in an eight-yard pass from Chahino to Norbert Espadron, the play after converting a fourth-and-three from the WSU 15.

Kress was intercepted on the first play after the kickoff, and RU added to its margin with a 34-yard field goal by Mauricio Escudero with 41 seconds remaining before intermission.

Third Quarter
On Wayne State's fifth play after the second half kickoff, Roosevelt's Carlos Conley returned an interception 45 yards for the score.

After an exchange of punts, Brandon Harvey had a 31-yard pick six for the Lakers pushing their lead to 38-0.

The Warrior offense went 73 yards in five plays with running back Sterling Anderson (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King [Davenport]) scoring on a 22-yard pass from Kress.  The big play on the drive was a 39-yard reception by redshirt freshman Mickey Keller (Ashburn, Va. / Independence) on a second-and-eight.

Fourth Quarter
On the third play of the stanza, Escudero connected on a 27-yard field goal attempt making it 41-7.

RU scored its final touchdown of the game with 6:59 remaining on a five-yard rush by Krys Riley-Richardson capping off a nine-play, 36-yard drive following an interception.

Wayne State put together an eight-play, 75-yard drive with freshman Bishop Thomas (Mount Clemens, Mich.) first career touchdown coming a 12-yard pass from Kress.

TEAM STATS
Roosevelt had a 413-273 edge in total offense, but WSU had a 113-83 advantage in rushing yards.  The Lakers were 5-of-5 on fourth down.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Sophomore XaVior Tyus (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) rushed for a game-high 62 yards.  Kress completed 16-of-25 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns with five interceptions.  Tyus had a team-high five catches (for 18 yards), while senior Justyz Tuggle (Redford, Mich. / Detroit Central [Bethune-Cookman) led WSU with 50 receiving yards.

LEADING THE LAKERS
RJ Smith rushed for a team-best 44 yards.  Chahino passed for 302 yards and three touchdowns on 23-of-39.  Norbert Espadron caught a game-high seven passes (for 80 yards), while Norion Espadron totaled a game-best 91 receiving yards on four catches.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude the 2025 campaign next Saturday (Nov. 15) at Northern Michigan.  The contest at the Superior Dome will start at 1 p.m.
