COLUMBUS -- The Wayne State University women's fencing team saw action at The Ohio State University's Elite Invitational on Saturday, November 8, at the French Field House.
WSU collected a 15-12 win over the Air Force Academy, while being thwarted by the Buckeyes (16-11), the University of North Carolina (18-9), and Denison University (15-12).
FOIL
In the foil weapon, sophomore
Anabella Acurero Gonzalez (Valencia, Venezuela / Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel) and senior
Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy / Liceo Linguistico Niccolò Machiavelli) competed for WSU.
Acurero Gonzalez and Mancini both went 10-2 on the first day. The sophomore went 3-0 against OSU, Air Force, and UNC, while adding one more win over Denison. The senior nabbed 3-0 marks against Air Force and Denison, while going 2-1 vs. both OSU and UNC.
SABRE
Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower [Macomb CC]),Â
Shriya Bangalore (Frisco, Texas / Centennial),
Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem), and
Mikhala Rivers (Maple Grove, Minn. / DeLaSalle) represented the Green and Gold in the sabre.
Byars (2-8) and Bangalore (2-7) each tallied a pair of bout victories, with the graduate student (Byars) collecting a win against student-athletes from OSU and Air Force, while the freshman (Bangalore) earned both of her bout victories against AFA.
Rivers tallied a 3-5 mark that included a pair of wins against DU and one more over an individual from Air Force.
Siddiqui finished the first day of competition with an 0-9 overall bout ledger.
EPEE
In the epee, both
Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary / Vörösmarty Mihály) and
Salma Abdrabou (Cairo, Egypt / Dar El Tarbiah IGCSE) found success on day one.
Galfalvy went 10-2 with 3-0 marks over UNC and Denison, while nabbing a pair of 2-1 performances over OSU and AFA.
Abdrabou went 10-2 as well, going 3-0 against Ohio State, Air Force, and Denison, and collecting one more victory vs. North Carolina.
