Men's Tennis Falls at Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad (5-1) were downed at Western Michigan University (10-5) 5-2, marking the team's first loss of the campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Green and Gold got off to a great start, going 2-1 in doubles to earn the point.

In the No. 1 position, George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) defeated Anton Arzhankin and Oscar Corwin 6-3 while leading the entire way.

Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) found success as well, as the No. 2 doubles pairing earned a 7-6 (7-2) comeback victory over Drew Evans and Alexander Antonopoulos.

Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) and Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) were topped by Jack Davison and Ashton Adesoro 6-0 in the No. 3 spot.

SINGLES
Hill was the only WSU student-athlete to earn a win in singles as the sophomore won in the No. 6 position.  Hill defeated Dimitri Moriarty by a score of 7-5, 6-4.

Drenth and Day were both unable to bring their success from doubles competition into singles as the senior lost 6-2, 6-2 to Anton Arzhankin with Day falling to Ashton Adesoro 6-4, 6-3.

Wasner (7-6, 6-7, 0-1), Klaus (4-6, 4-6), and Knowles (4-6, 3-6) each were unable to post victories in their respective singles matches.

UP NEXT
The Wayne State men's tennis team will return on Saturday, March 4 as they are set to host Hillsdale College at 12:00 PM inside of the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility.
