HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (2-0) earned a 5-2 victory at Hillsdale College (5-3) Friday afternoon. The Warriors returned to action after a two-week break.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Green and Gold went 2-1 in doubles to claim the first point of the match.
In the No. 1 position,
Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France / Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and
Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia / Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) prevailed 6-4 over Hillsdale pairing of Ane Dannhauser and Courtney Rittel.
Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and
Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.) competed in the No. 2 doubles spot, topping Elizabeth McGivern and Briana Rees 6-3.
Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) and
Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) fell in the No. 3 slot 6-3 to the charger duo of Isabella Spinazze and Megan Hackman.
SINGLES
Anais Ruyssen won in a hard-fought match with Dannhauser in the No. 1 spot. Ruyssen prevailed in the first set 7-6, but fell 6-1 in the second. The WSU student-athlete triumphed 6-2 in the third set to earn the win.
Competing in the No. 2 singles position was Arafat. The junior claimed an early 4-0 advantage in the first set, but a short rally from McGivern knotted it at 4 apiece before the Warrior claimed the final two games. In the second set, after being tied 1-1, Arafat surged to a 6-1 set victory.
Gorgidze won her fist set vs. Briana Rees 6-3, but fell in the second 6-1, forcing a tie-breaker set. The Warrior got out to a 3-0 advantage, helping her triumph 6-3.
Weekes found herself trailing behind Rittel 4-2 in the first set but rallied back to win 6-4. The Hillsdale student-athlete notched the first game of the second set, but Weekes controlled the pace, winning 6-2.
In the No. 5 slot, Beaulieu fell in three sets to Julia Zlateva 6-4, 4-6, 0-1.
Despite winning the first set 6-4, Uzcategui fell to Hackman after losing the second set 7-6 and third set 1-0.

The Wayne State women's tennis squad will return to the court on Saturday, March 8, when the Warriors will face Keiser University in the team's first match over spring break.
