NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (1-2 overall) took one of two games in the Saturday doubleheader at Newberry (6-1 overall). The Warriors were victorious 11-9 for their first triumph of the young season before falling by a score of 4-2 in the nightcap. WSU and NC will wrap up their four-game set on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
GAME ONE
Wayne State scored 11 runs on 10 hits including four runs in the third, four in the fifth, two in the seventh and one in the ninth.
The top five spots in the Warrior lineup went a combined 7-for-23 at the plate (.304 average) with eight runs scored, five RBI, three walks, and two triples. Those five were, from the top,
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. / [Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC]),
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.),
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.),
Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North), and
Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline).
Outside of those five spots,
Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central [Oakland]) doubled in the second,
Aidan Arbogast (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Stevenson [Mid-Michigan C.C. / Kellogg C.C. / Eastern Michigan]) hit a solo home run in the fifth,
Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) belted a solo shot in the ninth.
On the mound, five Warriors combined to get the 27 outs.
Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville [Jackson CC]) got the start before lasting four innings with four runs surrendered, one earned, on four hits. Miller struck out four batters and walked five.
WSU's four relievers included
Coy Plummer (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon),
TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake),
Ethan Getting (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Northern [Purdue Northwest]), and
Carson Tehan (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich S.S.).
Plummer lasted two innings with two earned runs given up before McAllister came in to hurl a scoreless seventh and pick up his second career win. Getting made his first appearance as a Warrior with three earned runs to his name before Tehan picked up the save in his first collegiate appearance (one strikeout).
GAME TWO
Wayne State scored first thanks to a solo homer off the bat of Hill to right field with two down in the top of the first.
However, Newberry doubled that output in the home half of the inning for a 2-1 advantage.
In the top of the second, with Hatzigeorgiou at third base,
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton [Mott CC]) singled to left center and tied the game up.
Fast forward to the bottom of the fifth where the first three Wolf batters reached on a hit by pitch, walk and walk, respectively. Then a sacrifice fly to right field put the home team up 3-2 before the fourth run scored when Newberry's Chandler Mims made it to first on an error by Hatzigeorgiou.
Making his first start as a Warrior,
Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket [Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College]) threw 4.1 frames with four runs allowed, three earned, on just two hits. Pulford-Thorpe walked six and struck out four. In relief,
Robert Klann (Livonia, Mich. / Brother Rice [Michigan State]) retired all five batters that he faced, one of which was by punchout.
