Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Minnesota Duluth, 7-5 and 10-2

Wayne State won both ends of a double dip for the first time this season.

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (8-9 overall) swept a doubleheader for the first time this season, winning 7-5 and 10-2 over Minnesota Duluth (7-6 overall) on Friday night in The Sunshine State.  The Warriors and Bulldogs will play another twin bill on Saturday with the first pitch in game one scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

GAME ONE
Minnesota Duluth struck first with two runs in the top of the second before Wayne State countered with a trio of scores in the home half.

Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]) singled in Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton [Mott CC]), Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile [Barton College]) doubled in Logan Van Sicklen (Waterford Twp., Mich. / Waterford Kettering) and Sanders came in on a wild pitch.

However, the Bulldogs proceeded to take a 4-3 lead in the third before going ahead by two in the fourth, 5-3.  The Warriors were able to erase the deficit and take the advantage back thanks to a four-run sixth.

In that bottom of the sixth, Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) got the scoring started with a groundout to first that allowed Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) to cross home plate.  Then, Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) tripled in both Sanders and Garza.  WSU's seventh and final run touched the dish when Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) forced in Hitzelberger with a base knock to left field.

On the mound, Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville [Jackson CC]) improved to 2-1 after 6.1 innings of work.  Miller gave up five earned runs on 10 hits with only one walk and four strikeouts.  Carson Tehan (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich S.S.) then secured his second save with the final two outs and just one hit.

GAME TWO
After trailing 1-0 through two frames, Wayne State outscored Minnesota Duluth 10-1 in the final five innings.

The Warriors notched one run in the third, four in the fifth, another in the sixth, and four in the seventh.

A trio from the Green & Gold each had a pair of hits including Hatzigeorgiou (2-for-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB), Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central [Oakland]) (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR) and Sanders (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, HR).  Hitzelberger, Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. / Roseville [Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC]) and Blakita each brought in a run as well.

On the bump, Gabe Nazelli (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) was brilliant in his 5.1 innings of work while improving to 3-0 on the season.  Nazelli surrendered one unearned run on just one hit with three free passes and nine punchouts.  TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake) handled the final five outs with one hit, one earned run, no walks and a strikeout.
