Men's Tennis Falls 4-3 to Lakers

DETROIT -- The No. 18-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (10-5 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) was defeated by No. 21-ranked Grand Valley State University (11-2 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) 4-3 on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES

The Lakers earned the doubles point after winning two-of-three matches.

In No. 3 doubles, Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) and Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) fell to the GVSU duo of Denys Zamaraiev and Joaquin Minguez Ribera 6-3.

Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) downed Stephen Claassen and Lawrence Ivanov 6-2 in the No. 2 position.

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) and George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) were thwarted 7-6 (10-8) in a heart-breaking match to Lucas Gonzalez and Victor Lopes in the No. 1 doubles spot.

SINGLES
Day, in No. 2 Singles lost in his first set 4-6, before battling back to win the second 6-1 and third 6-4 to defeat Lucas Gonzalez.

Knowles and Klaus both triumphed as well, as the freshman downed Patricio Sepulveda 6-3, 6-4, while the graduate student topped Ivanov 6-3, 6-4.

Drenth, Wasner, and Hill all fell, as Drenth was defeated 6-4, 4-6, 6-7 (7-9), Wasner lost 6-4, 1-6, 5-7 to Lopez, and Hill was bested 1-6, 4-6 by Jorge Ruiz.

UP NEXT
The Wayne State men's tennis team will next compete on Friday, April 4, as the squad travels to Lake Superior State University.
