Softball Splits At Parkside To Complete 3-1 Road Trip

UWP won the opener 10-1, before WSU took the nightcap 3-2.

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Wayne State University softball team (16-17 overall, 5-5 GLIAC) split a GLIAC doubleheader at Wisconsin Parkside (14-14 overall, 5-5 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.  The host Rangers won the opener 10-1 in five innings, before the Warriors rebounded for a 3-2 triumph in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU grabbed a 1-0 in the top of the third as sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) belted a pitch over the centerfield wall with two outs.  Wayne State had a chance to increase its lead as the next two batters reached on a single and a walk, but a pop out ended the frame.  The Warriors had a chance the inning before to break the scoreless draw as freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) had a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second, but was caught making too big of a turn at second.

UWP knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third as reigning GLIAC Player of the Year Mia Johnson hit the first pitch of the fame over the leftfield fence.  Two walks, a wild pitch and a pop out preceded an RBI single by Ava Swain with Parkside's third run scoring on a WSU miscue.

The Rangers added three runs in the fourth on back-to-back home runs by Eden Welling and Johnson off two separate Warrior hurlers.  Welling's blast followed a leadoff double by Logan Sivak.

Parkside closed out the game in the fifth as two walks and single loaded the bases for Johnson, who smacked her third home run of the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) fell to 2-6 after allowing five earned runs on four hits and four walks in three-plus innings.  She struck out two.  Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) recorded four outs but surrendered five earned runs on three hits and three walks.

Olivia Masnica (6-4) limited WSU to one run on four hits in five innings.  She struck out two and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
No WSU batter reached base more than once with Forman clobbering her team-leading fifth home run of the campaign.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Johnson went 3-for-3 with three home runs and six RBI, plus reached a fourth time via a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP
Parkside scored once in the bottom of the first for the early 1-0 advantage.  Haley Remington had a bunt single and continued on to second.  She scored on a two-out single by Megan Medlin.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when Swain had a leadoff bloop single just over the pitcher's mound.  After a fly out, pinch-runner Jadyn Polerecky was caught trying to steal second by WSU backstop Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).  A walk and a single put two Ranger runners on base.  Welling doubled down the third base line, but the relay from Mia Hool to Hunter Near to Molly Hool nailed Sivak at the plate to keep it 2-0.

The Warrior offense came alive in the top of the fifth.  Molly Hool had a leadoff double and senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) laced a 2-2 offering over the left field fence to tie the game at 2-2.  Mia Hool reached on a throwing error and was sacrificed to second by Forman.  Following a strikeout, freshman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) ripped an RBI triple to right center plating Mia Hool, with the eventual game-winning run.

UWP had runners at first and third with one out in the fifth, but Wayne State starting pitcher Grace Fisher (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside [Notre Dame College]) did her best Harry Houdini impersonation getting a pop out and a line out to end the threat.

A leadoff single by the Rangers in the sixth was followed by three consecutive outs.

In the bottom of the seventh, Johnson was intentionally walked and she raced to third on a sacrifice bunt.  A ground out to Maddie Hool, then Maddie caught a pop up behind second base to end the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
Fisher improved to 8-6 overall by winning her fifth consecutive decision.  She allowed two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings with two strikeouts and four walks.

Hope Maes started for UWP and left after two batters in the fifth.  She gave up two earned runs on six hits in four-plus innings with zero strikeouts and zero walks.  Shelly Deisz (0-3) allowed an unearned run in her three innings of work.  Deisz gave up two hits, while recording two strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Molly Hool went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Ruczynski hit her second home run of the campaign.  Forman extended her hitting streak to a WSU season-best 12 games with a single in the third inning.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Seven different batters had one hit apiece, with Johnson going 1-for-2 with two walks.
