Women's Tennis Triumphs 5-2 Over Grand Valley State

DETROIT -- The No. 32-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (6-3 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) topped No. 28-ranked Grand Valley State University (9-4 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors remain unbeaten in GLIAC action while handing GVSU its first conference loss of the campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Green and Gold's top pairing of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France / Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) downed the duo of Valentina Mozas and Neus Ramos Moreno 6-2 in the No. 1 doubles position.

In the No. 2 doubles spot, Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) earned a 6-3 victory over Rachel Sam and Estefania Hernandez.

Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) fell in a battle in the No. 3 slot, as the WSU duo was bested by Ipek Sakiroglu and Anna Soteras 6-7 (4-7).

SINGLES
Wayne State claimed victory in each of the top-three singles positions, as Ruyssen topped Ramos Moreno 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 1 position, Arafat defeated Mozas 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 in a contest that was forced to a tie-breaker set, and Gorgidze triumphed 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 while competing against Soteras.

Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa), in her return to singles competition, prevailed against Sam in the No. 6 position.  After losing the first set 3-6, the junior rallied to win the second set 6-0, and captured a 10-6 victory in the tie-breaker set.

Weekes and Beaulieu both fell in their respective singles matches, as the junior was thwarted 6-4, 2-6, 1-6 by Hernandez, while the sophomore was bested 3-6, 1-6 by Sakiroglu.

UP NEXT
The Wayne State women's tennis squad will return on Friday, April 4, as the team will compete at Lake Superior State.
