Softball Splits On Day One Of Spring Break Trip

WSU defeats Ohio Dominican, before falling to Wayne State College.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (4-7 overall) began its spring break trip on Saturday with a pair of close contests.  WSU defeated in-region rival Ohio Dominican (5-8 overall) 3-1, before being edged 4-3 by Wayne State (Nebraska) College (11-7 overall).

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors fell behind 1-0 in the top of the third against the Panthers as a one-out single Leea Ibarra, and a two-out stolen base preceded an RBI single by Liana Morreale.

Wayne State evened the scored in the bottom of the frame as senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) had a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).  Freshman Morgan Williams (Midland, Mich.) was robbed of a base hit on a sliding catch by ODU center fielder Ibarra.  Sophomore Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) laced a 2-1 offering into right center plating Ruczynski with the tying run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ruczynski and Hool did a carbon copy of two innings before as Ruczynski had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Hool.  With two outs, Forman worked a five-pitch walk and freshman Kately DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) delivered the go-ahead single through the right side.  Classmate Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) followed with an RBI single in nearly the same spot.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) improved to 2-1 by limiting ODU to one earned run on six hits in seven innings with a career-high eight strikeouts to one walk.  Long struck out seven on three occasions in her rookie season.

Amelia Spidell (2-3) started for the Panthers and allowed three earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings.  She recorded five strikeouts to two walks.  Emma Grau retired two of the three batters she faced.

Ruczynski and Forman each had two hits, with Ruczynski scoring twice.  Forman had an RBI and a run scored.

WSU extended its lead to 2-0 as DeWitt smacked her third home run of the season leading off the top of the fourth.

The Wildcats took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.  A one-out walk preceded two singles which cut the Warrior lead to 2-1.  With two outs, Kennadi Borngrebe laced a 2-2 offering into center field for a two-run double.

WSC added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a hit by pitch, a single and a Warrior error.

Wayne State University battled back in the top of the seventh after the first two batters were retired as both junior Danielle Fick (Wolverine Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central [Notre Dame College]) and Forman reached on errors sandwiched around a single in the hole by junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).  However, the final out was recorded with the tying run on second base.
