UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- Errors doomed the Wayne State University baseball team (18-18 overall, 7-4 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Saginaw Valley State (22-12 overall, 7-5 GLIAC). The Cardinals defeated the Warriors 10-3 to win the series, but six of those 10 runs were unearned as WSU committed two costly defensive miscues.
Wayne State held a 1-0 lead through three and a half innings before Saginaw Valley State notched three runs in the fourth, two in the sixth, two in the seventh, and three more in the eighth.
In the first frame, the Warriors scored their initial run when
Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) brought in
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton [Mott CC]) thanks to an unnassisted groundout to the first baseman. WSU's two other runs touched home in the sixth when
Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]) doubled in both
Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Barton College]) and
Noah Murciano (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Bill Crothers S.S. [Sussex County C.C. / Coppin State]).
On the mound, starter
TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake) was effective in his three innings pitched. McAllister didn't give up a run or hit, but walked four with two strikeouts.
First out of the bullpen,
Nick Baker (Brighton, Mich. [Lansing CC]) suffered his first loss as a Warrior (1-1) in three frames of work. Baker surrendered three runs, two earned, on five hits with no free passes and four punchouts.
Then entered
Ethan Getting (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Northern [Purdue Northwest]) who was responsible for a trio of batters retired. Getting allowed two earned runs on a single hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket [Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College]) set down two Cardinals, but let three others score, all three of which were unearned. Pulford-Thorpe had three hits on his line without a free pass and two punchouts.
Coy Plummer (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) represented WSU's fifth and final pitcher as he struck out the lone batter he faced, swinging.
Next up on the schedule, Wayne State will stay on the road to face No. 11 Grand Valley State (28-9 overall, 11-5 GLIAC) in a four-game series on Thursday through Saturday in Allendale.
