DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (21-24 overall, 9-10 GLIAC) dropped games three and four of the series against No. 21 Davenport (33-12, 18-2 GLIAC) on Sunday with final scores of 4-2 and 12-3, respectively. Next up, the Warriors will make up their final contest at Purdue Northwest on Tuesday with the first pitch slated for 4 p.m. eastern time.
GAME ONE
Davenport scored the game's first three runs with one in the third and two more in the fourth.
In the fifth, Wayne State got on the board when
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. [Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC]) came in on a balk.
The Panthers tacked on their fourth score in the sixth before
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton [Mott CC]) made it a 4-2 contest in the seventh as he singled in
Drew Dawson (Plymouth, Mich.). However, that's where the run column would stay.
Gabe Nazelli (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) suffered the loss (5-3) after three and two-thirds frames of work. Nazelli gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits with four walks and one strikeout.
Nick Baker (Brighton, Mich. [Lansing CC]) then took care of the final 10 outs. Baker surrendered one unearned run on just two hits with one free pass and one punchout.
GAME TWO
Just like game one, Davenport notched the nightcap's first three runs, two in the first and another in the second.
In the home half of that second, Wayne State's first score came when
Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) forced in McGuire on a groundout to the shortstop.
The Panthers punched back with a two spot in the third to make it a four-run game, 5-1.
In the fourth, McGuire took off from third base as
Noah Murciano (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Bill Crothers S.S. [Sussex County C.C. / Coppin State]) laid down a perfect bunt right back to the pitcher. The next batter, Dawson, slimmed the deficit to two (5-3) on an RBI single to the second baseman allowing Hatzigeorgiou to touch the plate.
That would do it for the home team's scoring, but the visitors tallied three in the seventh, one in the eighth and three more in the ninth.
Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville [Jackson CC]) fell to 2-4 after seven outs recorded. Miller surrendered five runs, four earned, on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Out of the bullpen,
Coy Plummer (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) and
TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake) closed it out with 11 outs and nine outs, respectively. Plummer's line included three earned runs, four hits, one free pass, and two punchouts. As for McAllister's, it read four runs, one earned, five hits, two walks, and one strikeout.
