Men's Tennis Falls 4-0 to GVSU in GLIAC Tournament Championship

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 2-seeded Wayne State University men's tennis team (15-7) was bested by top-seeded Grand Valley State University (16-2) 4-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warriors fell behind early, surrendering the doubles point to the Lakers after falling in two matches.

In the No. 1 position, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) were bested 4-6 by Lucas Gonzalez and Victor Lopes.

Max Faniel (Theux, Belgium / Collège Saint-François-Xavier S.S.) saw his first action of the tournament in the No 3 slot with Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium).  The pairing was defeated 1-6 by Denys Zamaraiev and Joaquin Minguez Ribera.

George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) faced Stephen Claassen and Lawrence Ivanov in the No. 2 spot.  The WSU duo held a 4-3 advantage before the match was halted following the results of the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.

SINGLES
Drenth battled with Zamaraiev in the No. 1 singles position.  The WSU student-athlete was downed 5-7, 0-6

Wasner competed in the No. 3 spot against Lopes, falling 6-7 (3-7), 2-6, while Knowles was bested 2-6, 6-7 (1-7) in No. 3 singles.

Hill (4-6, 4-4) and Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) (6-7 (4-7), 4-2) both trailed before the match was decided, while Day held a 6-3, 5-4 advantage.
