MIDLAND, Mich. -- The top-seeded Wayne State University women's tennis squad (12-4) was bested 4-3 by the No. 2 seed, Grand Valley State University (15-4), in the GLIAC Tournament Championship on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
WSU found success in doubles competition, winning two-of-three matches to nab the first lead of the contest, and enter singles with a 1-0 advantage.
In the No. 1 doubles position,
Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France / Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) and
Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) downed GVSU's top-pairing of Neus Ramos Moreno and Valentina Mozas 6-1.
Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) and
Shanice Weekes (London, England / Fortismere S.S.) collected a 6-3 win in the No. 3 spot, prevailing over Ipek Sakiroglu and Kalomoira Ralli.
Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and
Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) fell 3-6 to Rachel Sam and Estefania Hernandez, as the two pairings faced in the No. 2 position.
SINGLES
Five of the six singles matches were decided by a third-set tie-breaker.
Ruyssen impressed in singles, thwarting Ramos Moreno 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles position.
Arafat collected a singles win as well, defeating Mozas 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.
Weekes and Beaulieu competed in the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, with the junior falling 4-6, 6-3, 1-6 and the sophomore being bested 5-7, 6-4, 3-6.
Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) battled against Ralli in the No. 6 spot, falling 6-4, 1-6, 4-6.
Gorgidze was matched with Anna Soteras in No. 3 singles. The student-athletes split the first two sets with the overall match knotted 3-3. The redshirt junior found herself in a 4-1 deficit before roaring back and taking a 6-5 advantage. Soteras was able to tie the final set at six games a piece and ultimately earned the final game.
