DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (15-15 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) trailed Roosevelt (7-24 overall, 1-10 GLIAC) 8-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday afternoon at Harwell Field. The Warriors proceeded to score seven runs to walk off the Lakers for the second time in three games, winning in dramatic fashion by a score of 9-8.
Starting in that bottom of the ninth, the game's hero
Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) was the first man on with a single to second base. Then,
Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich. [Spring Arbor/Henry Ford CC]) singled through the left side and
Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) doubled down the right field line to load up the bases for
Mason McGuire (Lyon Twp., Mich. / Brighton [Mott CC]).
Following a pitching change, McGuire singled in both Dale and Hitzelberger to shrink the deficit to three at 8-5. One out later and with two outs on the board,
Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]) doubled to right,
Reagan Paulina (Highland, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central [Oakland]) walked and the bases were juiced again, this time for pinch-hitter
Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline).
Tuccinardi doubled down the left field line and would have tied the game up 8-8 if not for the ball getting stuck in the fence in foul territory. So McGuire and Sanders both scored, but pinch-runner
Gabe Zeldes (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) was sent back to third base.
Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) reached with a base on balls, which gave way for Hill's heroics. Hill fouled the first pitch off and took ball one. He then singled to center field to score Zeldes and Tuccinardi and win the game for the Green & Gold.
Wayne State scored its two other runs in the second when Paulina forced in Sanders with a sacrifice fly to right and the seventh when Dale singled in Hill.
On the mound,
TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake) made his first career start and lasted four and one-third innings. McAllister gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits with two walks, one strikeout and 61 total pitches.
First out of the bullpen,
Macio Miller (Kimball, Mich. / Marysville [Jackson CC]) recorded five outs in his relief appearance. Miller allowed four earned runs on four hits with two free passes. Picking up the first victory of his collegiate career (1-0) was
Carson Tehan (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich S.S.) with two frames of work. Tehan surrendered one earned run on three hits with a pair of punchouts.
Next up on Sunday, these two teams will conclude their four-game set with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
