Softball Season Ends With 2-1 Setback In 12 Innings

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (24-32 overall) had its 2025 campaign come to a close with a 2-1 setback in 12 innings against the University of Wisconsin Parkside (28-23 overall).  It was the third-longest game in NCAA Division 2 this season.

GAME RECAP
WSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as freshman shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) had a leadoff single to center field on the first pitch of the frame.  She stole second on an 0-2 offering and moved to third as the catcher's throw went into center field.  When the throw to third by the Ranger center fielder got away, Near scampered home with the game's first run.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh despite both teams having scoring chances.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ranger Rylee Baetz had a leadoff single and went to second on a one-out pinch-hit single by Taylor Utrata.  Warrior hurler Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) battled back from a 3-0 count to strikeout Reese Valha for the second out.  Two-time (2024 and 2025) GLIAC Player of the Year Mia Johnson laced a single to right plating Baetz, but was thrown out going to second.

Wayne State senior Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) had a one-out double in the eighth but was stranded.

UWP had two singles in the bottom of the eighth, but Long caught a line drive of the bat of Toni Rodriguez and doubled off pinch-runner Maddie Hernandez at first to end the threat.

Senior Jessie O'Donnell (Campbellville, Ont.) had a one-out single in the ninth.  In the bottom of the inning, Baetz had a leadoff single but was passed by Eden Welling on a ball that dropped down the right field line.  Long then struck out the next two Ranger batters looking.

Junior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) had a leadoff single in the 10th but could not get past second base.

In the top of the 11th, freshman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) drew a leadoff walk, and pinch-runner Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview) moved to second on a ground out.  Freshman Katelyn DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) laced a sharp single to center and took second on the throw as Barnes was held at third.  A fly out ended that frame.

In the bottom of the 12th, a one-out single by Valha was followed by a wind-aided drop fly down the right field line which moved Valha to third.  Haley Remington hit a 3-1 offering into right center, that senior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) made a diving catch but was unable to get a throw to home before Valha scored the winning run.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (7-9) threw a career-high 186 pitches and allowed just two runs (one earned) on 13 hits in 11.2 innings.  She struck out nine and walked one in the 47 batters she faced.
